Specially formulated for Dick Blick, we import this linoleum from Europe several times a year to provide the softest quality possible. It gives a finely detailed, sharp, clear print.
For best results, be sure your blades are sharp! Dull blades are dangerous and frustrating, especially to students. Because of the natural aging process, linoleum should be used within a year of its purchase to take advantage of its peak softness.
For your convenience, we offer our 1/8" (3 mm) thick linoleum by the square foot, in pre-cut pieces, by the roll and mounted on blocks.
Pre-Cut Pieces — For your convenience, we offer our unmounted linoleum in packages of pre-cut pieces in popular sizes.
Mounted Blocks — We've mounted our fine-quality, battleship gray linoleum on a 3/4" thick, pressed wood block for easier handling. Total thickness is 7/8".
Linoleum in Rolls — Enjoy extra savings on the same battleship gray linoleum in rolls. Cut it yourself using a sharp knife or heavy-duty paper trimmer. Linoleum rolls require truck shipment, and do not qualify for Dick Blick's free shipping offers.

This grey linoleum was a replacement for another product that was also not usable for carving. Dick Blick gave me credit for the first product which I very much appreciated so I tried again. Unfortunately this linoleum has the same issues as the first one. The product is extremely thin (1/8 inch) and so hard I could not carve it with the new Blick linoleum carving tools I ordered. Perhaps I am totally missing the intended use of these products? I simply do not know what to do with it so will probably throw it out. It would cost me as much to return the product as it cost to buy originally so that is not going to work. I really hate writing this kind of review. Maybe Quality Control should get involved....

As far as basic linoleum blocks go, I usually have pretty good luck with this. It's not exactly a high end, high quality product, but it's good for fine lines, small works, student work and learning. This time around I had a rough go with what I got because I had to use it for a print exchange. I wanted something easy to use and kinda basic to do a reduction linocut, but when I opened the box, the top and bottom edges of the linoleum were cracked and crumbling so I had to cut it down before I started so I'd have clean edges to print my first color with. When I began trying to print, the linoleum peeled right off the base block so I ended up having to use the bare linoleum to print my edition without any support under it. If I had more time, I would have sent it back, but as it was, I was able to make due. Next time I'll probably just order a roll because it's easier to control or get a block of the pink Speedball.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Great product, good price

This linoleum cuts well, and is perfect for a college student on a budget, unable to afford the expensive bookstore linoleum.

While I am relatively new to the world of linocuts, and thus do not have the vast experience that more professional artists would have, I have found this product excellent for what I have sought to make. The quality seems generally reliable, and where there have been minor defects they have not yet caused a problem in printing. (They also seem to be more common in the smaller pieces than in the large rolls, but that may simply be a false impression.) I have only used the unmounted, but a variety of sizes (4x6, 5x7, 12x12, and the large roll), and would recommend any of them. There has been a problem with some of the pieces having a curve in them that is difficult to flatten; other times it has not been difficult to flatten with books on top, etc.
Good standard product
Used this product many times and have never had a problem. I did receive some miscut pieces in the 2x3 size but never on the larger pieces. The miscuts were a pain but I ended up developing a design to use them as is .... haven't carved or printed it yet but I think it will turn out okay. Blick was great about the miscuts and I received a discount so I was happy! Overall, I like using this product.
The linoleum was brittle and cracked easily. Next time I will not buy it online.
I'll get linoleum somewhere else
The stack of 12x12" unmounted sheets was so arched with a permanent curve that I found it impossible to use. Even pressed under heavy weight for weeks, or warmed with a hair dryer, the arch persisted. In addition, the plastic used to wrap the stack left adhesive stuck to one sheet that I could not remove..
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that the linoleum you ordered was received in the condition you describe, and of course we're happy to take care of this for you. One of our Customer Care Agents will be following up via email to assist you.
Great for fine detail!

I use this project for my more advanced level middle schoolers and it would be great for high school students. It is harder to cut so it would not work for beginner students.
Battleship gray lino
Good: Consistent carving. Perfect amount of resistance to cutting tool. Not so good: Curls up even after warming and flattening
