The Nitram Baton is a charcoal holder with a square, grippy barrel for holding Nitram Mignonettes securely while drawing. The charcoal advances easily, while keeping hands clean in the process.
Soft, dark, and velvety smooth, Nitram Mignonettes lend themselves to the gestural flow and expression required when drawing from life.
The Baton is 8" (20 cm) long. The Mignonettes are approximately 3/16" square x 6" (4mm × 15 cm) long.

Comments about Nitram Baton and Mignonettes:
I have been an artist for many years and have tried a vast number of drawing products. Nitram Charcoal and Baton has helped me advance my practice three-fold. I'm having my students get this for all of my drawing workshops now. It's been a grand response. Kudos. Please get this in the brick and mortar stores. Get the word out.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Love drawing with this - but breaks
By NOLA. Artist

I use this in a figure drawing class and love how it makes drawing flow. My only complaint is in some time the plastic holder cracks and is unusable. My first did this so I was especially gentle with replacement- still it cracked. Pricey if doesn't last for long...
Merchant response: Thank you for reaching out! We're sorry to learn that the Baton didn't hold up well for you, and we'd like to work with you to make sure you have the re-designed, improved version. One of our Customer Care Agents will be in touch via email to see how we can help.
I'm quite happy with the Baton and Mignonettes
from Dallas, TX
Very happy with the Baton and the Charcoal that came with it. The charcoal mignonettes are wonderful, very soft yet not as brittle as some other I've used. Only down is it does go quick. I do wish the baton could accommodate other sizes of Charcoal without having to size it down yourself. I don't think it was made to accommodate other charcoals, even by Nitram which would have been nice. There's an Idea for Nitram! Still a decent buy.

New and Much Improved Version
from Indiana, USA
I recently wrote a review panning this baton rather severely, but it was a true evaluation of the product that I had bought here at Dick Blick (It does not show me as a verified purchaser because I did not still have the email link they sent me to review the product.) I would like to edit and update it, but it seems there is no way to do that, hence this additional review. The fragile little collar that so easily split (I went through three of them) has now been replaced by a much stronger version. Nitram was very good about replacing the things when they broke, but they always broke. They have now sent me a new much thicker and stronger collar. So I now feel warranted in updating my earlier review from one star to five, and I would definitely recommend it to a friend. If you already have one of the older ones with the fragile collar (or purchase one from some older stock) you can email Nitram and they will send you a new, stronger replacement collar. They appear to be a good company and stand behind their products. By the way, the charcoal mignonettes with these batons is excellent quality.
Great Idea But Too Fragile
I love this thing and it is a great idea, especially the high quality charcoal mignonettes it uses. However, it is almost worthless because the little slip ring that tightens the grip on the charcoal is thin, brittle, and weak. They split even when handled gently. I am on my third one now (Nitram has quickly responded and sent replacements when I wrote, but the replacements are equally fragile). Before installing this third one I wrapped it tightly from end to end with silk fly tying thread and coated it with varnish. It doesn't look so good, but I hope it will prevent another failure. This is a serious design flaw and Nitram should replace these things with something made of a more durable and stronger material such as a strong polymer, a flexible elastic polymer, or even a thin metal ring (which would last a lifetime). Nitram has too good a reputation to leave this piece of junk on the market as is. The solution is easy; it should have already been done!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This Baton Crumbles instead of the charcoal
from Eureka, Ca
First let me say this is a review of the baton only - Nitram charcoal is excellent. The Baton however, is junk. It's made of really, cheap thin plastic. Even with my being delicate, the retaining ring broke after only a few weeks of use. The Baton's a great idea & would be a great product if made from quality materials. As it is now, just junk!!!
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that the Baton charcoal holder didn't hold up as expected. One of our Customer Care Representatives will be in touch so we can take care of this for you.

This is a great tool to help you broaden your technique. I've used the charcoal right out of the package for a wide, flat edge and I've sharpened it for fine lines. Best of all, it helped open up my style and be far more gestural than I've ever been before. Great product.

Let me start by saying I like Nitram charcoal! While it isn't my "go to" brand, I use various Nitram products quite often. I was excited to get the new holder, which I expected to add freedom and looseness to my work, and give me a luxury experience while drawing. Unfortunately, the baton falls short of my expectations. The plastic, while nice and light, is an easily breakable material. The band needs to be pulled down quite far to keep the charcoal in position, and snapped on me after only a few uses. If the band were made of a light metal, I'd be happier with the product.
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with this charcoal holder. We're sorry to learn that it broke! Someone from our Customer Care Center will be contacting you soon to see how we can best address this for you.
Excelente for mid tones and taper ( low range values)
My first impression was, hmm this is a cheap plastic baton in an nice and good quality box. I prefer a better quality plastic for the Baton and not the box. Overall the mignonettes fits "well" (kinda difficult) into the Baton, and it really help and give more comfort, I'd say, just a bit more weight for Baton with a better quality material will give the 5th star.
