Herbin La Perle des Encres—"The Jewel of Inks"—dates to 1700, created in a Paris shop on the Rue des Fosses Saint-Germain. The house of Jacques Herbin was founded by a French sailor who brought ink and sealing wax formulas home from his voyages to India and has been producing fine writing inks continuously since. It’s among the oldest commercially available ink brands in the world.

Every ink in the La Perle des Encres collection is made from all-natural dyes, resulting in evocative, lightfast, pH-neutral colors that flow smoothly, dry quickly, and display beautiful shading. Subtle light-to-dark variation within each stroke add depth and character to your writing, especially when paired with broader nibs and quality paper. Gentle on pens and easy to clean, the inks pair beautifully with fountain pens, rollerballs, glass pens, and dip pens.

Each color carries a poetic French name rooted in nature, history, and exploration, from Gris Nuage (Cloud Grey), inspired by darkening skies over the open sea, to Vert Empire (Empire Green), an homage to Napoleon's coronation at Notre-Dame. Available in 40 colors across a gorgeous spectrum of greys, blues, greens, reds, ambers, and earth tones, each 30 ml glass bottle features a molded pen rest in the bottle neck.
