A very pleasant surprise

Comments about Fabriano Bristol Plus Pads:
As someone who has been using Strathmore's 500 Series Bristol for years, I bought the Fabriano as a less expensive alternative for sketch work and the like. However, it has now become my favorite! Stratehmore will always be an excellent product yet the Fabriano is a much better value for a paper that is just as good --and perhaps even better.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is the first time I have used the Fabriano Pads and I am impressed. The surface is so smooth. Can't wait to try markers and colored pencil on them.

Great paper but not for colored pencil

Very smooth paper, too smooth for my colored pencil work I prefer but would be great for other mediums.
Will be buying more very soon.

I use bristol for graphite, colored pencil, and marker. Fabriano by far has the smoothest surface of all the brands I've used, also very durable. I'll be switching to Fabriano's Bristol from now on just like their other paper's, it's far superior.
Excellent Paper for Most Media
This a the best all around paper I've ever used. I team this paper with the Strathmore Artagain Assorted Tints, Stonehenge Multi-Pad (Assorted Tints), and Bee Vellum. I use the vellum papers for drawing rougher looking images, such as animals. However, this super-smooth, white paper could just as easily be used and allows for more control of the media and, therefore, a higher degree of artistry. This is the white paper I reach for when doing "portraits" and "landscapes". It is also professional grade.

The Best Paper For Graphite
from A little cabin in the woods
Let me begin by saying I've tried a LOT of papers; and when I say a lot, I mean that it's kind of an obsession of mine. So I have pretty good perspective on what's out there and the difference a quality paper can make and Fabriano is hands down the very best paper I've found for detailed graphite work. It's extra white and ultra smooth but with no gloss, so tone changes and drawn textures really "pop" on this paper. You can tell from the minute you look at it and touch it that it's a high quality paper - it doesn't have the grittiness or manufactured feel of the less expensive paper. It's not cheap, but it's absolutely worth it if you're a professional or serious amateur who wants your work to look the best that it can. If you prefer smooth paper, as I do, I'd also highly recommend Fabriano Artistico hot press watercolor paper in 140 lb or 300 lb - they're both beautiful. I personally prefer their Bristol for graphite, though and I use those two for colored pencil work. The only 2 drawbacks of this paper are that 1) it's very white, so it's extremely hard to keep smudges away - I'd suggest using a bridge rather than a piece of paper under your hand, and 2) if you put anything but the lightest line, it's difficult to erase - you'll have a ghost of the mark left on the paper. I get around this by using my electric eraser, which does the job of cleaning up marks nicely. As with all Bristol papers, this is not a paper you want to use for colored pencil, as you won't be able to blend easily (I use oil-based pencils, but I've been told by others who use wax based that it's the same), although graphite blends beautifully. Like I said, their watercolor paper is beautiful for that, though.

Fabriano is the highest quality
Fabriano Bristol is hands down the best paper I've tried for graphite (and I've tried about a dozen papers. It's a smooth matte finish, not overly shiny like the less expensive Bristol papers like Canson and Strathmore (I happen to enjoy Canson's sketch pads, so that's not a slight on Canson - Fabriano is just better). You can tell it's a high quality paper from the minute you touch it. It's a crisp white, which makes the graphite look amazing and, although it's more stiff than regular paper (as Bristol should be), it's no as thick as some of the cheaper papers. Here are the down sides: Unlike the Fabriano watercolor papers, their Bristol doesn't take erasure well, so don't sketch your finished drawing onto it - you'll need to transfer your drawing. When you put down even a soft line, it'll have a ghost if you try to erase it. Also, if you want to use it for colored pencils, forget it. As with all Bristol papers, it doesn't allow for good blending of the colored pencils (I used my regulars, Polychromos on it, which are oil based pencils. I've talked with artists who tried Prismas with the same effect). If you want a great smooth paper for colored pencil, get Fabriano's 140 lb or 300 lb extra white (the regular white has texture) hot press watercolor paper. This paper is gorgeous and high quality - I would highly recommend it.
