Comments about Blick Retractable Brush:
This brush was difficult to open. The removed cap is supposed to fit over the end, so it forms a brush of conventional length, rather than the length of a crayon. The cap wouldn't lock onto the handle, however, it was too loose to stay attached. One of my watercolor students improvised by sticking a bit of painter's tape tape onto the handle, so the cap had traction, and would stay on. The brush itself isn't bad, the hair seems to be red sable, but the kinks with getting the handle on and off and to stay on the back made it too much trouble. I've just ordered another brand, to see if it's more manageable.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is a perfect size for travel. One of the great features of this brush is the way the cartridge protects the tip from damage during travel, yet opens and extends to reveal a full sized brush. The Kolinsky sable keeps a beautiful point for fine work, yet holds plenty of pigment. It's a wonderful brush!

Splurged on this purchase ... thought it was pricey, but now that I have it and have used it hiking in Idaho I know it was money well spent. The best part is the collar that pulls UP from handle to surround brush BEFORE you put the lid back on to toss in your backpack! No stray fibers get smashed into lid! The metal construction means I don't have to worry if heavy items shift in backpack. The brush has really made me enjoy my watercolors MORE. I was using cheap brushes before and synthetic fibers. This makes more of a difference than you think it could. I use it to paint ALL the time, not just on hikes! There's a hole in the lid to let air in, for times when the brush is put away damp during a hike.

I would buy this again.
I like the way the bristles are protected when not in use. You don't have to try to get a cover carefully over the brush hairs. Makes it great to use in travel kit.

I'm re-fitting my watercolor studio to be more mobile so that I can do more watercoloring on the go or where ever I am. For some reason, solutions surrounding the mobility of watercolor brushes are rather sparse. Intrigued by design behind these brushes, I gave them a try and I'm glad I did. The quality of the brushes themselves are very good, and the design behind the mechanism for keeping them well maintained on the go is unparalleled. A must for the mobile watercolorist. Well worth the moolah.

Great travel brushes

I just love these brushes. They are the only ones that I have ever found that retract rather than having to try and put the cover on without hurting the brush fibers. They paint well which is what you buy a brush for of course and the cap gives you a longer handle so they feel good in the hand. I like them so much in fact I have bought several of them three different times. Once to try them. Once to replace my entire much loved mini travel set lost on a cross country plane flight(sucked big time really!!!) and once as a gift for my niece who is very good at taking care of art supplies as well as using them. Add the lovely Isabey travel mop and you are going to be really pleased. To extend their working life I usually keep a lesser quality brush for working the paint puddles from my travel set pans and a dropper to wet them. Be sure to open the brushes up to dry completely when you return from your plein air adventure so you don't dammage the fibers. Happy plein air travels to you. PS try some aprox 4" x 9" sized paper(Arches?) its just big enough to finish a little panorama without the light changing too much and consider cutting some 300# weight paper for a real treat even if they are only post card size. Its not expensive when you are working small. Suggestion: I always use two small water containers rather than just one-maybe fruit cup sizes for my mini travel set.
