When constructing a large canvas that needs extra stability, use Best Heavy-Duty Cross Braces in tandem with Best Heavy-Duty Stretcher Bars.
Made of kiln-dried pine, Best Cross Braces have a 3/4" profile and measure 1-3/4" wide. Choose from solid or center-notched braces.
If the frame you're constructing measures 36" or longer in either direction, we recommend adding a cross brace every 18–24" as a rule of thumb. For layout suggestions, visit the Resources tab.
Best Heavy-Duty Cross Braces are priced per strip, not pair. For the correct fit, order the cross brace in the same size as your stretcher bar. The actual measurement of the cross brace will be shorter, but it will be sized to fit inside the assembled frame.
Please note that even though these cross braces fit snugly against the stretcher bars, they must be attached to the frame with cross brace brackets. Two FREE brackets are included with every cross brace purchase.

Comments about Best Heavy-Duty Cross Braces:
A size 54" is not made, so I ordered a larger size to cut down. Not exactly a problem with that, though somewhat of a hassle. Would prefer having a requested size on hand. I ordered notched cross-braces and the fit seems good, but there should be some kind of clasp to secure the cross braces together where they touch at the notches. The plastic end holders that secure the braces to the main stretchers is a clever idea that is easy to assemble, etc.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Must have for bigger frames

I used them in a commercial space. Super easy and very effective on larger frames. The plastic brackets are great quality. Adjustments are very easy. Sturdies up larger frames tremendously. Great option for the price and quality! Highly recommended.

I wish there were more sizes available so you don't have to cut them. Brackets were missing. Better check on them first thing when the arrive. Miscalculation may occur when buying in large quantities.
Merchant response: Thank you for reaching out! We apologize for the missing brackets, and we're happy to send those out. One of our Customer Care Agents will be following up via email to assist you.

I had never used the cross braces before, so I didn't know what to expect. They are great! Easy to use with the plastic joint and milled close to perfect.

Good, sturdy product. Note though that if your cross braces are going to actually cross, you will need to have both braces notched. If you have the company do it, it will take an extra 4-6 weeks. Just keep that in mind. You may want to reconsider the pattern of your support braces. I found the Best corner braces, which are just masonite-like triangles that screw into the corners of the stretcher frame to be helpful too, and may eliminate the need for crossing, and notching. My stretchers were 48x80 and I used three 48" cross braces and four corner braces. The design of the brackets they included with the order is useful and intelligent.

The stretcher bars and cross braces were delivered promptly, within a few days. However, the cross brace brackets were not included. I had to call again to have them delivered. Overall it's a good product, with little to no warping.
