Amaco Low Fire Clays and Glazes

These special effects glazes imitate the favorites of artisan potters. They are Cone 05 (1911&deg;F) semi-opaque oxidation glazes that yield the look of high-fired reduction stoneware. They can be fired over any Amaco earthenware clay, but look best over dark or red firing clay. The color in the clay will partially show through the texture and add another color dimension to the glaze.   These glazes look their best over dark or red firing clay such as Amaco 67M. The color in the clay will show through the glaze somewhat, which adds another color dimension to the glaze. Many different looks can be achieved depending on the clay on which the glazes are applied. Effects like Tommoku, Rutile, Oil Spot and other reduction surfaces are achieved without the cost or trouble of high-fire reduction.   Apply Artist's Choice Glazes over cone 04 fired bisque or higher. Better results are achieved when red clay is fired one or more cones higher than the glaze firing.   For glazes A-24 Exotic Blue and A-40 Seafoam Green, glaze fire slowly and add a 20-minute hold at the end of the firing. The other glazes in the series will work well whether they are fired fast or slow.

Finished Art Piece with Amaco Crystalex Glazes

Amaco Crystaltex Glazes consist of a basic color, with the addition of one or more crystals of contrasting colors. Multi-color effects can be subtle, as with CTL-32 Chocolate Chip, which fires to a creamy yellow peppered with rich brown, or they can be bright and flashy, like the red, white, and blue of CTL-54 firecracker. 

No two pieces will ever be alike. Brushing, dipping, or pouring methods are recommended for this glaze. Cone 05. The following glazes are not dinnerware safe: CTL-26, CTL-30, CTL-32, CTL-34, CTL-35, CTL-40, CTL-43, CTL-52, and CTL-69. 

Amaco Crystaltex Glazes consist of a basic color with the addition of one or more crystals of contrasting colors. No two pieces will ever be alike.

Amaco F-Series Glazes (Finished Examples)

Amaco F-Series Glazes are intense, brilliant, semi-opaque colors that fire with a high gloss and are safe enough to be used on pottery dishes. Great for carving, they are available in a variety of vivid hues that break and pool beautifully over texture. F-Series Glazes are fritted and lead-free. They come in ready-to-use liquid form. Brushing, dipping, pouring, or spraying are all suitable methods for application on mature fired bisque.

Cone 05 (1915 Fahrenheit). 

All colors are food safe with the exception of Christmas Tree Green (F-47). All CL colors are not safe for spray application.


Amaco F-Series Glazes are fritted and lead-free. These intense, semi-opaque brilliant colors fire with a high gloss and are safe enough to be used on pottery dishes. Come in ready-to-use liquid form.

These liquid Raku glazes are lead-free and formulated to create dazzling effects and varied surfaces on non-functional pottery and sculpture. No two finished pieces will ever be the same because the metals and colorants of the glazes are brought to the surface by flame and reduction. In order to achieve dramatic effects, Raku glazes must be reduced in a Raku firing. 

R-10, R-11, R-20, and R-21 are transparent and sprayable. All other colors are opaque, except for R-18, which is translucent. Glazes must be fired to their recommended temperature of Cone 05 (1911°F, 1044°C).

These liquid Raku glazes are formulated to create dazzling effects and varied surfaces on non-functional pottery and sculpture when fired in a reducing environment. No two finished pieces will ever be the same! Cone 05 (1911&deg;F, 1044&deg;C).

Amaco's LM Matt Glaze Series is one of the most pleasing for decorative art pottery. These glazes are supplied in liquid,  ready-to-use  form. Brushing, pouring, dipping, or spraying are all suitable methods of application. Amaco Matt Glazes should be applied on fired bisque and slow firing is recommended. Cone 05 (1911F, 1044C)   These glazes are dinnerware safe. They contain no lead or cadmium bearing ingredients. All colors except Transparent Matt are opaque.

The Amaco LM Matt Glaze Series is one of the most pleasing for decorative art pottery. These glazes are supplied in liquid, ready-to-use form. Apply them on fired bisque. Slow firing is recommended.

These glazes come in a liquid, ready-to-use form. They must be applied on a mature Cone 04 (1971&deg;F) bisque, then glaze fired to Cone 05 (1911&deg;F). Their variegated matte textures predominate at lower temperatures, and gloss textures at higher temperatures, with a mingling of matte and gloss between the extremes.&nbsp;Apply Amaco Textured Alligator Liquid Glazes on mature fired bisque by brushing, pouring, or dipping.   (O)&nbsp;=&nbsp;Opaque (TP)&nbsp;=&nbsp;Transparent (TL)&nbsp;=&nbsp;Translucent

Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglaze - Purple

Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes can be used with or without glaze. When left unglazed, they will assume the rich textural appearance of velvet. When glazed with transparent matte glaze, they take on a soft, satin finish. Colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze but will lose their matte surface quality.

The underglazes fire true to color from the jar and can be easily applied to wet clay, greenware, or mature Cone 04 bisque (1971 F / 1077 C). To shade, tint, or customize the color of these underglazes, simply mix them with other colors. They may be brushed on mature fired bisque before applying a covering glaze. Safe for spray application. Fire to Cone 06-10 (1855°F–2381°F, 1013°C–1305°C).

Lead-free Amaco Velvets are opaque underglazes which have the appearance of velvet when left unglazed. When glazed with transparent matte glaze they will assume a soft, satin finish. Cone 05-10.

Use these fine-art decorating colors in watercolor pans for intricate, fine detail on figurines, dinnerware, etc. Intermix for tints and shading. Sets are packaged in plastic boxes with hinged lids.  

Fire to the temperature of the covering glaze. Pink, Maroon, Peach, Rose and Yellow hold their color when fired to temperatures up to Cone 6; All other colors may be fired up to Cone 10. These underglazes work best with clear transparent glazes. All colors are sprayable and dinnerware safe when applied and fired under Amaco LG-10 clear glaze.

Amaco Lead Free Underglaze Chalk Crayons - Open package of Set no 1 Chalk Crayons with 2 removed

Create unusual styles and a variety of textures with Underglaze Chalk Crayons by Amaco. A watercolor effect can be obtained by brushing chalk sketches with water. For pastel techniques, draw on bisque ware, then finish with a transparent glaze. Sketching on bisque will result in a pebbled appearance. Underglaze Chalk Crayons can also be blended by rubbing with fingers. 

Clear Transparent Amaco Glazes LG-10, F-10, DC-10, and HF-9 are recommended as a covering glaze. Sponge on first coat of clear glaze lightly to avoid smearing your design. Allow to dry and brush on additional coats as needed. Pieces should be fired to the maturing temperature of the covering glaze. 

The maximum firing temperature for Black, Brown, Dark Blue, Dark Green, White, Gray, and Medium Blue is Cone 10. The maximum firing temperature for Turquoise, Yellow, Dark Brown, Blue-Green, Light Brown, Medium Green, and Yellow-Green is Cone 5. The maximum firing temperature for Rose and Lilac is Cone 05. 

If left unglazed, Amaco Underglaze Chalk Crayons should not be used on surfaces which come in contact with food or drink. Amaco clear glazes LG-10, F-10, and HF-9 or any other dinnerware safe glaze are recommended to be used over Amaco Underglaze Chalk Crayons to make them food safe. Amaco Underglaze Chalk Crayons have only been tested and approved as dinnerware safe when applied and fired under Amaco LG-10 Clear Glaze.

Individual crayons measure approximately 2-3/4" × 7/16"(7 cm × 1 cm), and are slightly irregular in shape.

Amaco No. 67 Sedona Red Clay (Bisque, Clear Glaze, and White Glaze)

Amaco Sedona Red Clay has a rich red color before and after firing. It's excellent for all hand methods, including modeling, slab, coil, sculpture, and wheel throwing. 

This clay has wide firing range of Cone 05&ndash;02 (1911&deg;F&ndash;2052&deg;F). At Cone 05, shrinkage is 11.7% and absorption is 7%. At Cone 02, shrinkage is 13% and absorption is 9.2%.  

Sedona Red Clay fires well without slumping. Each 50 lb (23 kg) carton contains two 25 lb (11 kg) bags of moist clay.

For all hand methods of modeling, slab, coil, sculpture, and wheel throwing. Moist clay has a rich red color before and after firing. Wide firing range, fires well without slumping. Firing range of cone 05-02 (1911 degrees F-2052 degrees F).

Amaco No. 29 Brown Stone Earthenware Clay is excellent for all types of hand-building, slab work, extrusions, sculpture, and wheel-throwing. It can be fired at Cone 05–5 (1911&deg;F&ndash;2205&deg;F). This clay is talc-free. 

The 50 lb carton contains two 25 lb blocks of moist clay.

Amaco No. 27 Off-White Sculpture/Raku Clay - Angled view of 50 lb wet clay block

Amaco No. 27 Off-White Sculpture/Raku Clay is made from finely ground white clays that are combined with medium mesh buff grog to increase porosity and reduce cracking, shrinking, and warping.  

Recommended for raku, this de-aired moist clay can also be used for  hand-building  and throwing larger pieces without fear of slumping or cracking.  

Amaco No. 27 has a wide firing range, from Cone 05&ndash;5 (1911deg;F&ndash;2205&deg;F). Bisque fire to Cone 04 (1971&deg;F, 1077&deg;C). The recommended glaze firing is Cone 05 (1911&deg;F).  

At Cone 5, the bisque is white with some black specks, and the shrinkage is 9%, with 10% absorption. At Cone 10, the ware is light buff with very few specks, with a shrinkage of 8.4% and absorption of 1.7%.  

A 50 lb carton consists of two 25 lb bricks, each in a poly storage bag, so any amount can be used as required and the rest stored for future use.

Amaco No. 25 White Art Clay is an all-purpose, low-fire, de-aired moist clay that is gray-white in the raw state and more intensely white when fired. Suitable for hand-building, modeling, and wheel throwing, its extreme plasticity makes even very large pieces easier to throw. 

This clay's unusual resistance to crazing makes it ideal for the classroom and all types of ceramic work.  

Bisque fire to Cone 04 (1971&deg;F, 1077&deg;C). The recommended glaze firing is Cone 05 (1911&deg;F), but this clay can be fired as high as Cone 3 (2138&deg;F) without distortion. At Cone 04, shrinkage is 6.3% and absorption is 13.7%.  

A 50 lb carton consists of two 25 lb bricks, each in a poly storage bag, so any amount can be used as required and the rest stored for future use. 

This clay is talc-free.

Amaco No. 25 White Art Clay is an all-purpose, low-fire, de-aired moist clay that is gray-white in the raw state and more intensely white when fired. Suitable for hand-building, modeling, and wheel throwing, its extreme plasticity makes even very large pieces easier to throw.

Amaco's non-toxic Casting Slip is ready to  pour  into plaster molds. Casts set up fast, release easily, and dry quickly. It is non-crazing, has low shrinkage, and fires bisque. 

Recommended bisque firing is to cone 04 and glaze firing to cone 05 (glaze firing range is 06-02). Comes in a 1&nbsp;gallon (3.8&nbsp;L) plastic jug.

Amaco's non-toxic Casting Slip is ready to pour into plaster molds. Casts set up fast, release easily and dry quickly. It is non-crazing, has low shrinkage, and fires bisque. Cone 04-06 but 05 recommended for bisque firing. Comes in 1 gallon plastic jug.
