Because pastels require something to grip onto when applied, the amount of texture or "tooth" a pastel paper or pastel board has is the most important thing to consider. The number of pastel layers that can be applied depends upon the depth of the tooth — the deeper the tooth, the more layers that can be applied. Applying a pastel ground can also add texture to a smoother paper to prepare it for pastel application, and many pastel papers have sanded surfaces that really grab and hold onto pastel particles. Layering, blending, and erasing are a few of the techniques pastel papers are designed to withstand, and the strongest pastel papers are made from 100% cotton. Cold press watercolor paper and canvas are also an acceptable surface for pastel work because of their texture.
