About Staedtler

Since the 17th century, when so-called “lead-pencil makers” practiced their trade in the Nuremberg region of Germany, Staedtler has been ahead of its time by consistently developing inspirational, innovative products.

One of Nuremberg’s pencil pioneers was Friedrich Staedtler, an ancestor of the company’s founder, who made pencil making his primary profession. References about Fredrich Staedtler in Nuremberg city annals date back to 1662.

Friedrich Staedtler was the first craftsman to make pencils from start to finish — from the lead and the cutting of the wooden stick up to the finished pencil itself. Although this was in direct violation of the Nuremberg Council (which had determined that these processes required two different trades), Friedrich Staedtler’s actions prepared the ground for the pencil-making profession.

In the year 1834, one year before the Staedtler company was founded, Johann Sebastian Staedtler had already invented a colored oil pastel pencil that could be sharpened to a point just like a pencil, making it one of the first colored pencils ever.

More than 80% of all Staedtler products are still made in Germany. With three production plants in the Nuremberg metropolitan region, Staedtler is the largest European manufacturer of graphite pencils, colored pencils, erasers, mechanical pencil leads, and modeling clays.
