BLICK Gessoes

Blick Gessoes offer unbeatable performance for painters at any stage of their journey. Explore a wide variety of sizes and grades for students, beginners, hobbyists, and professionals—all at a great value.

Gesso, an Italian word meaning “chalk,” describes a type of base or primer that is applied to canvas and other surfaces to prepare it for painting. Once made from chalk, white pigment, and an animal glue binder, today gessoes are typically made from an acrylic binder, chalk, pigment, and other materials to ensure long-term stability. Most frequently used as a base for oil and acrylic paints, gesso provides a slightly toothy surface that allows the paint to adhere for optimal long-term performance.
