Create one-of-a-kind indigo dyed wall art using shibori dye techniques. Infinite ways to fold and dye the canvas — infinite design possibilities!

Instructions

1. Cover your work area with a plastic table cover, and gather supplies. Soak unfinished cotton canvas in cold water and soap; rinse and leave damp.

STEP-2

2. Fold canvas using shibori dye techniques. For a list of techniques, visit: ritdye.com/techniques/shibori

STEP-3

3. For itajime, fan-fold horizontally. Use wood blocks, popsicle sticks, clamps and zip ties to create patterns.

STEP-4

4. Repeat to create desired pattern and set aside.

STEP-5

5. To prepare dye bath, fill a large plastic container or metal sink with 3 gallons of very hot water. The water should ideally be 140°F. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dye bath. Wearing rubber gloves, add 1/2 cup of well-shaken Indigo to dye bath. Stir well.

STEP-6

6. For a high contrast pattern, submerge the fabric into the dye bath for 3 to 5 minutes. For more color and less white space, leave the wrapped fabric in the dye bath for 10 to 20 minutes. When the desired color is achieved, remove wrapped fabric from the dye bath. Do not remove wood blocks or zip ties. Following the package instructions, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing to enhance the color, increase color retention, and prevent dye from bleeding into white areas.

STEP-7

7. Using wood adhesive, assemble the stretcher bars and let dry.

STEP-8

8. Making sure the front of the dyed canvas is facing down and the backside is facing up, lay the stretcher bar on top of the canvas. Stretch canvas over the top bar and secure with one central staple in the center. Repeat on the bottom, left, and right side of the frame. When satisfied with placement, continue to stretch and staple the canvas onto the frame. When you reach the corner, fold fabric around the corner and stretch towards the inside of the frame. Secure with staple.
