My favorite watercolor paper
from Portland, ME
Comments about Fabriano Artistico Extra White Watercolor Paper:
My favorite paper for illustration is Fabriano Artistico 300 lb hot press paper. This paper provides consistent quality and works well for inking with dip pens due to the relatively smooth surface. When I do studies or smaller works, I sometimes use 140 lb press, but the lighter paper needs to be stretched or mounted very carefully. The heavier weight of paper absorbs more water, allowing more glazing before the paper becomes saturated with pigment. If you are a beginner, the cold press may be more forgiving. This paper does is not nearly as forgiving as Arches. My only complaint is that I wish they offered the 300 lb press in standard sized pads for convenience. You'll either fall in love with this paper or hate it.

Functional if on a budget, but not top of the line
from Upper Black Eddy, Pa
I bought a sheet of 200lb extra white to try, since the Saunders Waterford 200lb was getting too expensive for me. Fortunately, I didn't by more than the trial sheet because it's very disappointing compared to SW. The paper buckles like 140lb, making even moderate (i.e. not heavy) washes difficult. I also had trouble lifting even granulating colors, adding further frustration. I suppose I could describe FA 200lb as functional for sketches and color-testing (the bright white is good for that), but not for a serious painting. I won't be purchasing this product again.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

watercolors sank, look faded
from Walpole NH
I have used this paper in the past with good luck, but this last batch of 300# hot press is useless. There seems to be insufficient sizing. My watercolors (best quality) have no impact. The washes sink so fast that I cannot get a smooth wash, there's an instant drying line, and they look mottled. I've tried both sides of the same sheet to see if it was watermarked on the wrong side, but have the same results with both sides. Very disappointed. I do commercial art and require a combination of fine detail with controlled washes. I like the bright white because it gives a good color reproduction. I've been painting for 30 years and need reliability, not sure where to turn next.

Fabriano Hot Press
from New York, New York
This is a consistently wonderful paper. Takes layers of watercolor and gouache beautifully without colors underneath becoming dull/ muddy or with paper buckling ( I use 300pd). Also ideal for mixing media such as colored pencil & markers as well.
Soft Press is the only paper I use
I'm a freelance Illustrator and graduate of SVA's illustration program and I've experimented with multiple different types of paper throughout that process. I discovered Fabriano's soft press paper while New York Central was still open in the east village and now it's the only paper I use. It's absorbent but still allows the ability to lift pigments. It has the perfect texture as it's not too smooth but it's not as rough as cold press can be.

My favorite paper thus far
I work primarily with the reductive charcoal process to make my pieces. I heard whispers of this "soft press" paper, and decided to try it out. This is by far the best paper I have worked with! It far surpasses the toothiness of Arches cover paper, and is wonderfully sturdy (it definitely withstands the abuse of charcoal reduction marvelously).
The Fabriano Paper Mill was founded in 1264 and has been credited with many inventions and advancements in the field of paper making. Today, artists can choose from a wide variety of 100% cotton, archival watercolor papers in many different formats and surfaces.
