These where a gift but I was told it's like having colored pencils, markers or a paint brush depending on how much water you add.

Good for lower chroma work.
from Winchester, VA
I ordered these pencils to try them in conjunction with value study & monochromatic work. They were a change of pace from acrylics and I have enjoyed working with them. I was able to introduce color in a controlled way allowing me to stay focused on the value. I enjoyed the simplicity of the colored water soluble graphite pencils. I found myself using water soluble "graphitone" sticks with the graphitints also with interesting results that hold potential. I look forward to further work with them.
Smooth application with beautiful colors.
from Eugene, OR
So far I have used the pencils for sketching. The leads are a little thicker than other colored pencils or watercolor pencils I've used. The leads are softer than most colored pencils I've tried. They go on smoothly and the colors are subtle but rich. Can't wait to try with water!
These pencils are great
from Fountain Hills, AZ
I love to draw with regular graphite pencils, so thought I'd take it one step further. The colors are muted...great for the landscape drawings I love to do. A bonus...they're erasable and water-soluble too. Will buy them again. Derwent makes top quality pencils. Love the Coloursoft pencils as well.

Fun, Quality Product
from Little Rock, AR
Colors brighten exponentially w/ water. The graphite and pigments separate slightly when pooling in the water; creates interesting optical mixing effects. The pigments vary in density and willingness to move w/ the water. Light applications of pencils can be erased, heavier applications do not erase well. Once wet and then dried, CANNOT be erased AT ALL. Once the paper is dry, you can layer more material, but you'll need to re-wet to get the same brightness. Colors become muddy if you do all your layering before wetting; in other words, if you draw, mixing colors, and then wet at the end, the colors may be muddy. If you draw with one color, wet, let dry, then draw with another color, wet, let dry, you'll get fantastic optical mixing and color complexity. As far as I can tell, Derwent has mixed water-soluble graphite with pigments, the graphite itself does not have it's own color. Does not go down as smooth as graphite, but is also not waxy like most colored pencils. Because the pigments are mixed with the graphite, there are no truly BRIGHT colors. For instance, there is no really good yellow. Your best bet is to mix light washes of "Meadow" (for brightness) with "Sage" (for hue). However, the muted colors are very lovely. I bought this product on a whim, as I was intrigued by the idea of colored graphite. While it was not what I was hoping for (it's a very nice set of water-soluble colored pencils, nothing more), it's a high quality set, and worth the experimentation if you draw or paint with water-soluble media.

Subtle coloring pencils great for sketch, backgrounds or long distance view of landscape, or for shadows, clouds, metal. These pencils are a useful happy addition to my pencil collection.

I love my graphitints!
from wooster, OH
When I saw the 12 pack at my local store, I knew I wanted them, but not that small of a pk. I already had the graphitone's and the Inktense. I had to drive an hour away to get the 24pk. They did NOT disappoint, and for not seeing them used before, only going on the front of the package.... I fell in love with them. I use them as both a pastel version and a more bold version of the pencil. And one person below commented that the WHITE PENCIL was a waste- it is good when using it in water.. it makes the break of the ocean SHOW UP really well. And with clouds. It has its uses when you know how to use white... as the lightest colors always get laid down first in anything. I use them all the time together with my inktense and also with my acrylic paint as well, and also together with my colored pencil. They are very versatile. Thumbs up. Worth every penny.

Brought them for the first time
from Yadkinville, NC
So, I really love graphite and I am beginning to work with watercolors. I was looking for watercolor pencils and came across this pencil. After buying and testing it out (I only brought 1, because I was skeptical) I can say it was decent. - Pencils provide smoothness when drawing.- I use them with water, to add shading in certain areas, which I found to be very successful. - I just love anything with graphite, so these pencils are pretty decent with that touch. I'm still trying new techniques, but I think I might buy these pencils only for details in my watercolor, until I get used to these pencils :)
