This lead pointer/sharpener was recommended to me by a fellow atelier student. She taught me to extend the lead out of the lead holder about an inch before sharpening. I've managed to get a little over zealous and break a lead or two but it happens even to the most accomplished artists.

It did not produce a fine point on the pencil. It produced a blunt end. I thought it just might have been a bad sharpener, so I got another one which did the same thing.

Ok, at first I had problems snapping leads, but that was because I was sharpening at an angle. So if anyone else is having an issue I'd recommend not putting too much force to the side while sharpening. I'm using mostly Turquoise Prismacolor 6b and Faber Castell 2h leads. Hope that helps someone else. Other than that I find it very useful, sturdy and expect it to last me a long time.

I had some trouble with this when I first got it. Had some broken leads when I tried to sharpen them. After I used it a few times it moved a little easier and the leads didn't break anymore. Works well once it's "warmed up." It worked for my HB and 3B leads.

Breaks leads and doesn't sharpen
Just got this in the mail today. It does not work, simply put. I have broken 2 different 2mm leads several times trying to sharpen them. Completely useless.

Soft Lead brakes when sharpening
By Drafting Gerry

I do a little Drafting and love this sharpener.I know that you may have some difficulty in sharping softer leads because some leads may break as you sharpen. The First thing I do is to put a Little 3 IN ONE Oil on to the shaft of the Alvin Rotary Lead Pointer.I DO NOT Press Down Hard on to the sharpener and turn it.This works for me!I just wish they could come up with a sharpener that could clamp on to my Drafting Table.
