PR112-Naphthol Red AS-D
PR242-Pigment Red 242
PR178-Perylene Red
PR3-Toluidine Red
organic, monoazo
Toluidine Red is a semi-opaque, yellowish red pigment with high tinting strength.
Toluidine Red has very good lightfastness.
Toluidine Red is not regarded as toxic.
Toluidine Red or Toluidine Scarlet has been used in inks, textiles, artist materials, and plastics.
PR112-Naphthol Red AS-D
organic, monoazo
C24H16Cl3N3O2
This Naphthol Red is an intense scarlet red pigment that is heavily staining. It has an average drying time. It is semi-transparent and has relatively poor covering power.
This Naphthol Red has been rated as having excellent lightfastness under ASTM testing, but other testing methods have demonstrated some tendancy for the color to fade with exposure to strong ultraviolet light. It has been considered a replacement for less lightfast naphthol reds such as PR3. Not suitable for exterior use.
Naphthol Reds are not considered toxic. Naphthol Red AS-D may cause eye, skin, or respiratory irritation. Contact with dry pigment should be avoided.
Unknown.
PR242-Pigment Red 242
organic, disazo condensation
A bright yellowish red, often referred to as scarlet. It has average tinting strength.
It has excellent resistance to solvents, acids, and alkali, and is heat stable up to 300°C. Disazo condensation compounds have very good lightfastness for organic pigments.
Pigment Red 242 is used to color plastics, paints, and printing inks.
PR178-Perylene Red
organic, anthraquinone
C48H26N6O4
Perylene Red is a moderately intense, semi-opaque, medium red pigment, appearing somewhere between a Cadmium Red and a Cadmium Deep Red hue. It has excellent brightness and tinting strength. Its partial transparency makes it useful as a glazing color.
Perylene Red has excellent lightfastness and permanence, but its tints may darken after extended exposure to sunlight. It is not considered suitable for exterior use.
Perylene Red has no significant acute toxicity. Its long term hazards are currently unknown.
Perylenes have been used as vat dyes since 1912, but they were not manufactured and sold as pigments until 1957.
