Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the advantages of alcohol-based markers over water-based?

Alcohol markers have the advantage of being fast drying, so they're easier to blend without saturating the paper (paper dampened by waterbased markers that's then overworked can shred or pill). Alcohol markers are generally dye-based and lack the lightfastness of pigment-based markers, which tend to be water-based. Water-based markers are not always pigment-based but, compared to alcohol markers, they are generally low odor, which may be a consideration for group settings or users with sensitivities.

  • How lightfast are markers? How do I keep work from fading?

Most markers are not rated for lightfastness. Although some are pigment-based and will be more resistant to fading, many are dye-based, and some dyes fade quickly. Be sure to pay attention to the properties of the markers you choose for your project. Although UV protective glazing can help minimize fading, some markers will be best used for work intended for reproduction (illustration and design) or temporary display (greeting cards).
