Create your custom palette of white, blue, and neutral shades. Use Utrecht NOOD Odorless Paint Thinner to thin your paints, and Utrecht Alkyd Medium to decrease the drying time.
Start by establishing your horizon line with a quick pencil sketch.
Next, spread out your paints on the canvas to create a transparent layer for the sky, ocean, and sand. Let the sand overlap with the ocean for a gradient effect.
Reestablish your horizon line with the tip of your brush.
Sketch out clouds, rolling waves, and seashells with your pencil.
Using the fat-over-lean technique, work your way from top to bottom. Add the leanest layers first and use less medium as you go along.
Create the cloud texture by swiping the paint in multiple directions. Add shadows with a variety of white, blue, and grey shades, and create highlights with your whitest shade.
Continue with the ocean, adding shades of blue to create shadows. Use a thinned-down white to create the foam of the water.
Add neutral tones for the seashells, creating shadows in the sand with shades of grey. Be sure to blend your colors to make it look natural.
As you get to your final layers, create more texture by redefining highlights and shadows.
Lastly, reestablish the horizon line with the tip of your brush.
