Arches Art Board is ready for framing without mounting, eliminating a step as well as the added expense. The art finished on acid-free paper is displayed and protected on two-ply, 1.2 mm archival Canson conservation board, making self-preservation simple. Arches Watercolor Boards for Plein Air Painting
By Catherine Hillis Studios
Comments about Arches Art Board:
I love to paint on Arches Watercolor Board during plein air events. The boards make my life so much easier. Once I create my plein air painting, I spray the surface of my watercolor with an archival spray created especially for my medium, secure the work into its frame and I'm ready for the exhibit! Traditional watercolor framing is much more difficult and I have to bring so many more tools. Watercolor board is just as archival, works well with watercolor and you can eliminate glass in framing. This little painting was created on watercolor board during the 2016 Shadows on the Teche plein air competition in New Iberia, LA.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have used this product for years for watercolors and acrylics. It comes in cold, hot, and rough press and I use them all. I do still sometimes use watercolor paper but don't take the time to stretch it. This board gives high quality and will not warp. It's worth your time to give it a try.

Better than illustration board
By Kent the Artist
from Shippensburg, PA
For years I used traditional cold press illustration board for my "high end" caricature work.A lot of the coloring is done in watercolor, and illustration board could only take so many overlapping washes until it became unworkable. Recently I switched to Arches watercolor board, and find that it is not only easy to draw ink lines, but like Arches paper (which I use in traditional watercolors), I can apply many overlapping washes without damaging the surface. I have yet to do a traditional watercolor on Arches board...but have high hopes for it. I have a 40" wideboard set aside for a major work. If it works the way I hope, it will eliminate the need to stretchthe paper before painting.
Arches is my favorite paper. It never tears on me. The surface has never broken down with too much water absorption.
Love the durability!

The boards are being used for a couple watercolor paintings for Christmas gifts this year. Love the durability of the product, definitely would recommend.
Not for acrylic mediums or much water
from Elmira, NY
I bought these to use with Golden Fluid acrylics in watercolor style. I used them with the addition of Liquitex Flow-Aid in the proper portions to water that I would just dip my brush in before applying the paint to the paper. The Flow-Aid went through the paper and disintegrated the glue holding the paper to the backing, resulting in blistered paper and the impression of the ribbing of the backing showing through. The same thing happened using Golden Open, Golden Acrylic Flow Release, and Golden Retarder. I then tried to just use plenty of water, wetting the paper with a big brush several times. That helped, but then the panel buckled. I also found that this paper tends to allow the pigment to settle into the fibers, which causes little white specks to show, as if the pigment is granulated even when it isn't.So I wanted to give other acrylics users a heads-up about these issues. Also if you do a lot of wet-in-wet with watercolor, you might reconsider this choice. It would be better to buy a heavyweight wc paper than use this in that case.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Arches Art Board Saves the Day

Using this for an oversized watercolor commission...working perfectly. Thank goodness....Glad for the board and not having to deal with paper this large. Would like a little more "cold press" texture.
Great drawing board

I use these boards to attach to my watercolor surface for painting. They are sturdy enough to last a long time and do not bend and the price is affordable.
I have bought this product again and again
from Central, NJ
The hot press surface is great for detail. I'm disappointed that Blick dropped the 32 x 40" size! I hope they seriously reconsider this. (I'd be up for a 40 x 60" size, but haven't seen that anywhere).

Enjoy working with Arches watercolor papers. The art boards are stable and practical since art may be framed without glass if it is given a spray coating of Kamar varnish.
