When the longevity of cotton fibers is not required, both intermediate and professional artists recommend the Strathmore 400 Series Bristol.
Regular (Vellum) surface works well with pencil, charcoal, and pastel. Smooth surface is ideal for detailed ink work, and is also suited for pencil and marker. Both surfaces are excellent for airbrush.
Acid-free. 22" × 30".
Handling Charge — When ordering sheets of paper or board larger than 18” x 24” in quantities of less than 10, a $3.00 per order handling fee applies. Paper or boards may be assorted to reach the quantity of 10.

Quick delivery, carefully packaged, great quality

Strathmore Bristol 400 series paper. I use this paper for high quality colored pencil drawings. My order arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I can get the same paper at a brick and mortar store in my area, but their salespeople act like you're interrupting their day when you're ready to check out, so I vowed to find another source for this paper. I will order from Blick again.

I was most impressed with the person I dealt with in the ordering process. She made the process more like a conversation and made me feel she knew well what she needed to do. I don't remember her name but she did her job well.

I used the product for ink work, pens, india ink and stamping. It has a great smooth surface and the pens especially look nice on the paper. The only thing I would look out for is keeping your hands off the bristol while you work. It has buckled in a few places from where my hand was.

Excellent for comic work!
from Cambria, CA
Buying Strathmore 400 series bristol 4 PLY is a great purchase for illustration. The key is 4 PLY! It is near the heft of illustration board but still usable on a light box when necessary. At the same time it is heavy enough of a board that it holds up under a heavy application of wet media i.e. ink and or watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil etc. The smooth surface provides a terrific surface for slick lines and textured dry-brush alike. and it is great to draw on because you can erase and erase without damaging the surface texture. One drawback in buying large sheets is having to cut them down yourself. However, one 22x30 sheet yields three 11x17 standard size comic boards or two 15x20 standard illo board size pieces when cut properly. Worth an hour of time to trim them up and possibly use some for oversized work when needed.

Hard to find in art stores, a good buy here on Block's. A good weight. I use with gouache, oil based marker and ink. Bright white, very smooth surface takes paint beautifully, preserves integrity of the ink line fairly well. Don't make a mistake, it cannot be erased very well without damaging the paper

Actually Reviewing the Paper
By G Rat
from SSSSSSSSeattle, WA
I saw that my favorite paper to work with only had one review on here, and it was given 1-star. I couldn't believe it! Then I read the review and saw that this guy was complaining about the shipping, and some kinds of marks on the paper -- he gave this bristol a 1-star review because of the CONDITION of the paper he received, not the quality of the paper itself. That, my friends, is not a very good review.I am an inker, and it took me soooooo long to find a paper that I like to work with. The Strathmore 400 Smooth is hands down the best bristol I've ever used. The 300 series 'smooth' and the 500 series 'plate' are too smooth, and I generally don't like working on vellum (unless I know that I won't be doing any pen work at all). The 400 Series smooth is perfect. It's not like the 300 or 500, so smooth and shiny you can almost see your reflection in it -- the 400 has a little texture to it. But it's still smooth enough that my nips never snag. Also, since it's not as shiny as the other two, it doesn't take too long for ink to dry when you're working with pen (brush strokes dry almost instantly).I buy the 14"x17" and cut it down to 11"x17". It's better than Blueline Pro boards, Canson Comic Boards, Canson Bristol, Eon Comic Boards, and, like I said, even the other Strathmore bristols. Don't let that other guy's 1-star review fool you, this paper is legit. Even that guy likes it! He was just in a huff because there was a pencil mark on one of the sheets that he got. Jeez.

Blemishes on the stock
from Phoenix, AZ
I use this product regularly and have typically purchased it at my local art store. The reason I sought to find another retailer is because the price was significantly higher than online stores offered for the same item and because I got tired of weeding through the inventory for stock that wasn't blemished or damaged in some way. (Typically, there are pencil marks, unidentifiable marks, footprints, and other blemishes I had to avoid.) I figured that since I was ordering online, I'd get stock that had never been on store shelves and therefore free from customer and staff careless handling of the items. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Every single piece was either blemished by stray marks or damaged with significant dents in/on the stock. Due to the fact that I bought them online, am disabled and can't afford to ship the items to exchange with no real expectation of receiving blemish-free stock, I decided to work around the problems and make it work. I'll likely not buy online again and have subsequently found an art store that appears to not sell stock that is damaged, blemished or the like.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
