Japanese Printmaking Papers

Chiri is handmade from long kozo fibers with imbedments of small pieces of bark. Sheets are 23" × 35½" (approximately 58.5 cm × 90 cm), beige, and acid-free, with deckle edges. Weight is 37 gsm.

Hosho is a traditional, high-quality kozo paper, strong and absorbent. It does not shrink or tear easily, making it a good paper for woodblock or lino printing. Sheets measure 19" × 24" and are sized and acid-free, with deckle edges. Weight is 85 gsm.

Hosho Student Grade is similar to Hosho, but slightly heavier and coarser. Sheets measure 16" × 22" (approximately 40.5 cm × 56 cm), and are acid-free, with four deckle edges. Weight is 85 gsm.

Kinwashi is machine made of short, thick manila fibers. It's smooth on one side and textured with bark inclusions on the other side. Sheets measure 24" × 36" (approximately 61 cm × 91.5 cm), with deckle edges. Weight is 30 gsm.

Kitakata is manufactured from mitsumata. Mitsumata fibers produce a soft, smooth surface with a natural gloss. The silky touch makes this paper a favorite. Sheets measure 16" × 20" and are acid-free with deckle edges. Weight is 30 gsm.

Masa, machine made in Japan of sulphite pulp, is versatile and very reasonably priced, a strong paper with an even formation. Individual sheets measure 21" × 31" (approximately 53 cm × 78 cm), and are 77 gsm weight.

Mulberry Paper is handmade from the inner fiber of the mulberry to produce an exceptionally pure, translucent paper, used by conservators in repair and lamination. Very strong, despite its light weight. Sheets are 24" × 33½", not sized, and acid-free.

Okawara Paper is handmade of kozo fibers and sulphite. It's soft, supple, and strong. Laid lines are almost invisible. Sheets measure 12" × 16" (305 mm × 406 mm), and are natural white and acid-free, with deckle edges. Weight is 60 gsm.

Sekishu is one of the oldest papers in the world, and is still made by hand today. It's a strong, crisp, deep cream colored paper made from kozo fibers. Sheets measure 24" × 39", are not sized, and are naturally acid-free with deckle edges. 30 gsm.

Unryu, which literally means "Cloud Dragon Paper," is made by adding long swirling fibers to a basic kozo pulp. Unryu paper is white and translucent. Sheets are 24" × 39" (approximately 61 cm × 99 cm), not sized, and acid-free, with deckle edges.

Strong and absorbent, acid-free papers are made in the centuries-old Japanese tradition from the fibers of the mulberry tree. Because they do not shrink or tear easily, these sheets are good for woodblock or lino printing.
