Created in 1893, this 100% cotton fiber, acid-free bristol is an industry standard.
It's available in Vellum and Plate surfaces. Plate (Hot Press) is unsurpassed for fine pen and pencil work, allowing flat and even washes. The Vellum (Cold Press) surface is designed for pencil, colored pencil, soft to hard charcoal, hard pastel, and oil pastel. It is also suitable for washes and gouache. Both surfaces are excellent for airbrush.
Note — Some sizes are cut down from larger sheets. Therefore, the sheet you receive may not have watermarks.
Handling Charge — When ordering sheets of paper or board larger than 18” x 24” in quantities of less than 10, a $3.00 per order handling fee applies. Paper or boards may be assorted to reach the quantity of 10.

good quality paper but not my favorite
Comments about Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Pads:
I wanted to like this paper, but I find that I can't layer colored pencils in the same manner as the Strathmore 400 series (vellum). I'll stick with the Strathmore 400 series in the future. This is a good quality paper and may work for others.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Always my go-to paper for graphite drawings
from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Comments about Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Board and Pads:
Bristol vellum surface is perfect for layering graphite....just enough tooth to hold the substance, but without texture that overpowers the image.

Excellent for graphite
from Trenton, NJ
I would recommend Strathmore's 500 Series bristol board - both "vellum" and "plate" surfaces - to any serious or aspiring graphite artist without hesitation. I can't vouch for its workability in other media, but I have found both the more toothy vellum and the ultra-smooth plate surfaces to be excellent for different types of work in graphite. Both take erasers surprisingly well, although you shouldn't expect miracles, and the graphite lays down very evenly. Blending is easier with the vellum (it's warmer, and nice for more expressive blocks of light and shadow. I like it for furry and feathery creatures)...but I love the freedom of the super smooth plate surface - no tooth inhibiting pencil flow at all, and the very shiny surface is nice for certain types of work. Strathmore got it right with the bristol board.

I have used Strathmore 500 Bristol for years. I use it for my colored pencil drawings and it holds up well with lots of layers and burnishing.

For Oil Pastel Artists
from Salem, OR
I make abstract oil pastel pictures. The smooth, solid surface of Bristol Boards provides easy flow across the surface, allowing maximum of free, spontaneous movement of the pastel sticks and palette knives. The board is always working with me. A joy to use.

Great paper, packing problem
By B Squared
from San Diego CA
I ordered the 30" X 40" single sheet plate finish which arrived the other day. The products are wonderful and they are well worth ordering due to the pricing. My occasional problem which continues intermittently is when the paper is ordered, some of the time it is slightly creased or slightly damaged and this is unacceptable to me. I have ordered from Blick online for over three to four years now with the occasional paper creasing problem. Canvases and materials arrive just fine but they need to find a better way to ship the higher end paper through the mail without risk of damage. Not damaged every every time mind you, as my previous order was not slightly creased, but enough times over the years to make the buyer a little wary if it is an important commission.
The best paper quality for color pencil and ink work.
from Tampa FL
I do detailed drawings in color pencil and ink. Not only does this paper have a tooth that grabs the color and shows the pencils off to their best advantage, but the paper is so strong and durable that it will stand the test of time. It is a good size for a drawing.
Outstanding surface for oil pastels
I use oil pastels on this product. Ideal for the pictures I create. Its smooth and solid surface give me exactly what I need.

I use this paper for colored pencil and graphite portraits. I am convinced that it is the best quality and surface for my art. I also have students who refuse to use any other paper product for their work.
