Welcome to dickblick
Made with Ampersand's own True Artist Hardbord substrate, Gessobord is perfect for all studio and plein air painting applications. Its fine tooth finish is delicate enough for glazing, fluid brush strokes, and tight detail, yet tough enough to hold up to the most rigorous palette knife painting, collage, and masking techniques.
This premium archival surface is ready to use — no priming or prepping is required! Pre-primed with a professional-quality, acid-free Titanium White acrylic gesso ground for enhanced clarity of color, Gessobord is an ideal surface for traditional and water-based oils, alkyds, acrylics, collage, and mixed media.
Flat panels can be framed or mounted. Cradled panels can be hung on a wall with no additional framing. The edges are sanded, so you can apply your favorite ground to create an extra dimensional painting.
Made from sustainable forest products that ensure the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water, Gessobord is formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds.
Gessobord is made in the USA.

Great surface for oils
Comments about Ampersand Gessobords:
I am an oil painter and love these boards. I found that I have to use softer brushes to keep the paint from sliding around in the beginning. After I discovered this, I was thrilled with the way my paintings turned out. I have tried other boards and none has matched the quality of these. I have not had any warp though I have not painted on any really large ones. I always tone my panel before I begin and this helps the next actual paint layer to adhere. I do wish that Ampersand would create some toned ones. I will continue to buy these. They are quite simply the best.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The only surface I will ever paint on!
from Elmiria, NY
I have been using Ampersand gesso boards for a number of years now. They are expensive but well worth the price, a flawless prepared surface on which to paint. I use the most expensive choice, the 2" cradled boards. You won't regret using these!

In love with these panels

Easy to paint on, oil paint adheres nicely, light weight, love to paint on these boards.
A good surface for alla prima oil paintings, smooth, but with enough fine texture to hold the paint.

So glad I found this stuff
Exciting product that has renewed and deepened my lifelong delight as a painter in oils. The smooth texture provides just enough tooth to grab the paint while still permitting the most minute detail. The absorbent surface allows quick drying. The application of glazes and scumbles is so much easier with this surface--you don't find paint from a glaze getting caught by the grain of canvas or linen. It's also good to know that the panel is not as delicate or as susceptible to damage as a canvas substrate, and for better or for worse it will be around when the fibers of canvas are weakened by age. Similar products do. Or have such a thick layer of gesso and may have little bumps on the surface that have to be sanded off. Highly recommended.
Great plein air panels
These panels are sturdy and durable. For plein air and pochades you wont find much better for the price. If you like panels that allow for heavy direct paint application then this is the one.

A Little Smooth
I find this product requires layers of paint to gain any texture, and/or good coverage, with oils. The paint sort of slips on the first coat, as the surface is very smooth. It seems to be easy on brushes, and you can eventually get a nice painting, I just don't see it happening on a direct painting of the finished product.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I paint with Acrylics, it's perfect.
Gessobord is Ampersand's surface for oil and acrylic painting. These premium painting surfaces are made with a unique archival seal technology that provides a barrier between the wood substrate and the painting surface. A professional artist grade of acrylic gesso is then applied so the boards are ready to use -- no preparation is necessary.
Ampersand manufactures a wide variety of archival artist panels. There is a surface for every artist, every medium and every technique. Watch this video to learn which of these boards is right for you!
