Welcome to dickblick
Made with Ampersand's own True Artist Hardbord substrate, Gessobord is perfect for all studio and plein air painting applications. Its fine tooth finish is delicate enough for glazing, fluid brush strokes, and tight detail, yet tough enough to hold up to the most rigorous palette knife painting, collage, and masking techniques.
This premium archival surface is ready to use — no priming or prepping is required! Pre-primed with a professional-quality, acid-free Titanium White acrylic gesso ground for enhanced clarity of color, Gessobord is an ideal surface for traditional and water-based oils, alkyds, acrylics, collage, and mixed media.
Flat panels can be framed or mounted. Cradled panels can be hung on a wall with no additional framing. The edges are sanded, so you can apply your favorite ground to create an extra dimensional painting.
Made from sustainable forest products that ensure the protection of wildlife, plants, soil, and water, Gessobord is formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds.
Gessobord is made in the USA.

These are great - just what I wanted.
For years I've made my own boards from hardboard panels, which is cheaper but a lot of work and prone to imperfections. I've picked up the pace of my painting and couldn't keep up with making the boards, so I ordered these, and they are just right. Nice texture.

I have been buying these for years from Blick.

The gessoboards have fragile corners that are easily damaged in shipping, but I requested care in packing and they arrived in excellent condition.

I really like this surface for small oil portraits. It takes the charcoal initial sketch very nicely and erases well. Good painting surface from the first tonal wash to the last accent. I recently had a commission to start and found that I was out of panels. Didn't want to wait 2 weeks for an order to arrive, so I went to a local artsy craftsy store and got a different brand. Started sketching, panel wouldn't take the charcoal, so I ordered the Ampersand Gessobord from Blick and waited for delivery to start the painting. I just need to order more BEFORE running out.

16"x20" gessoboards WARPED :-(
I ordered 3 16"x20" gessoboards for a workshop I was traveling to in Wisconsin because they were flat, ridged, and I could carry them onto the plane. My first day in class we were instructed to lay down 3 thin base layers of coldwax medium mixed with pigment. Then set them aside to dry till the afternoon. When I came back 3-4 hours later the boards had warped significantly. I was very suprized because these are very ridged boards. My application of paint was no thicker than instructed. My CWM was not runny at all, so no excess moisture. So what happened? The instructor suggested I put tape in an X pattern on the back side then let it dry overnight. I guess I will see in the morning when I return but I'm thinking theses panels are going to be trashed. Not very happy with ampersand right now.

Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Gessobord. With an unbraced panel, surface tension on the painted side will sometimes need to be balanced by an application on the opposite side. Sealing or painting an "X" on the back can alleviate bowing, or you may wish to work with the braced panels in the future. It is a great product for an amature artist or a professional
Gessobord is Ampersand's surface for oil and acrylic painting. These premium painting surfaces are made with a unique archival seal technology that provides a barrier between the wood substrate and the painting surface. A professional artist grade of acrylic gesso is then applied so the boards are ready to use -- no preparation is necessary.
Ampersand manufactures a wide variety of archival artist panels. There is a surface for every artist, every medium and every technique. Watch this video to learn which of these boards is right for you!
