The ultimate mixed media panel!
Archival and acid-free, Claybord is created by applying Ampersand's patented, archival kaolin clay ground to a True Artist Hardbord substrate, then sanding it to a velvet-smooth, absorbent finish.
Claybord is ideal for ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, casein, egg tempera, airbrush color, collage, photo-transfer, pencil, and pen. The highly responsive surface is perfect for thinly applying and removing colors. You can even scratch through it to add contrast, texture, and fine details. Paint colors remain true and brilliant.
Made from sustainable forest products that ensure the protection of wildlife, plants, soil, and water, Claybord is formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds.
Choose flat panels or cradled panels in a variety of sizes and profiles. Cradled panels allow you to hang your work with no additional framing. The edges are smoothly sanded and ready to be finished if desired.

When i can't find it locally...

Comments about Ampersand Claybords:
Sometimes i cannot find what I need in my local craft stores. Because the prices are great and the process is easy and fast, Blick is one of the best places to order from.

Clayboard arriving without damage!
By Nora the Painter
I paint on Ampersand Clayboard. My last few orders have come without any damages. Thank you!
from Madison, WI
This is absolutely an artist's grade scratchboard. Smooth, even, black surface with a white clay layer underneath. The board supports fine incising as well as removal of larger areas. The clay layer takes color nicely, particularly the 'made for the media' inks sold by ampersand.
This claybord can be shaped into any shape you want with a laser and it's very lightweight too. Takes watercolor paint well and doesn't scratch off after sealant.
Love this product!

I use Claybord in a different way. I mount my completed watercolor paintings onto it using soft gel medium and then I varnish them with archival Acrylic varnish. That way, I can avoid using glass and they can be framed just like an oil or Acrylic painting.
Watercolor on Claybord
I recently got some of these to use with my watercolors. My impression is that some people will love it, and some will hate it. My main issue with this board is not being able to glaze colors how I like. However one lovely advantage is the blending. Colors blends so easily with each other that you can create many interesting effects. While I was able to create something pleasant, it still wasn't my preferred surface and I will be trying the aquabord to see if that does better. #sweepstakes

Good: They are a nice surface to work on, feel very substantial and don't need a frame.Negative: The back has a large black brand stamp which I don't want on my art. I've ordered 3 times and twice some have been damaged in shipping. Some are not perfectly equal in size so if you want to install them very close together as a set, you will be able to tell that one is larger.
it is what it states

I am using this substrate to silk screen on and it is very absorbent. I am still in the experimenting phases of using this product to find what works best for me. This does offer a wide range of options for those looking for something new to work on.
I Will buy this product again & again

My Choice for Acrylic painting
I love Ampersand claybord, both the white and also the black for scratchart. Wouldn't use anything else. Plan to try the white for oil painting next.
Ampersand's original and most versatile panel, Claybord, has an ultra-smooth kaolin surface that accepts a wide variety of media. The absorbent surface allows for quick drying time of inks and paint. The real advantage of Claybord is how the surface can be manipulated; ink can be completely erased without affecting the integrity of the surface using Ampersand's oil-free steel wool. Sgraffito techniques can also be used on Claybord, something that cannot be achieved on paper.
Ampersand manufactures a wide variety of archival artist panels. There is a surface for every artist, every medium and every technique. Watch this video to learn which of these boards is right for you!
