The ultimate mixed media panel!
Archival and acid-free, Claybord is created by applying Ampersand's patented, archival kaolin clay ground to a True Artist Hardbord substrate, then sanding it to a velvet-smooth, absorbent finish.
Claybord is ideal for ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, casein, egg tempera, airbrush color, collage, photo-transfer, pencil, and pen. The highly responsive surface is perfect for thinly applying and removing colors. You can even scratch through it to add contrast, texture, and fine details. Paint colors remain true and brilliant.
Made from sustainable forest products that ensure the protection of wildlife, plants, soil, and water, Claybord is formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds.
Choose flat panels or cradled panels in a variety of sizes and profiles. Cradled panels allow you to hang your work with no additional framing. The edges are smoothly sanded and ready to be finished if desired.

well crafted and exceptionally diverse surface
from akron ohio
Comments about Ampersand Claybords:
I used the Ampersand Clayboard for a triptych and it was both challenging and sturdy. The surface allowed for many different approaches, as I used acrylic paints, wanter color crayons, the steel wool (made by Ampersand) and pencil. The paint dried rather quickly which made it more challenging as I was working on a large area. It was a sturdy surface which did allow me to rework the piece many times. I purchased it again and this time will be using watercolors.

Claybord is also great for oils, speeds drying time on preliminary layer which I like. I used to paint on primed Masonite panels and will not go back. Also a great surface for sketching before painting.
Ampersand....Just the best.....

I use these instead of Encausticbords for my encaustic work....I like them just as much-actually better because they are easy to draw or watercolor on before the wax is applied whereas the Encausticbords have a rougher texture. You can't go wrong with any Ampersand product.

Very pleased with the lowest prices for claybord, quick delivery and no delivery charges. I tell all the art association to go to you for claybord. Wish you sold alcohol inks - the latest rage.

Love the feel of clayboard and can't wait to start on a project using it. Colors stay sharp or can be made to disappear in background. Love the firmness of clayboard, won't buckle or wrinkle and can stand up to many techniques.
Good for egg tempera

My favorite boards to use.
I am an encaustic artist and these are my go-to boards....More so than the Ampersand encaustic boards. I like to do a lot of pre-drawings, watercolors and inks to prepare for the encaustic, even though many times the work becomes hidden or just slightly revealed in the painting. The clapboard is better for this type of prep than the encaustic boards, which are a bit rougher and harder for pencil and charcoal to take smoothly. Try the clayboard, it holds the encaustic just as well and you can get a better more elaborate underpainting when you are using encaustics. In my 9 years of working solely with encaustics...I have never had any problems with them.
I love Claybord!!!!

I am professional artist and have used Ampersands Claybord for over 10 years. Its versatile, I can use a wide range of mediums on it, and it has a lovely smooth surface. I love it!
Ampersand's original and most versatile panel, Claybord, has an ultra-smooth kaolin surface that accepts a wide variety of media. The absorbent surface allows for quick drying time of inks and paint. The real advantage of Claybord is how the surface can be manipulated; ink can be completely erased without affecting the integrity of the surface using Ampersand's oil-free steel wool. Sgraffito techniques can also be used on Claybord, something that cannot be achieved on paper.
Ampersand manufactures a wide variety of archival artist panels. There is a surface for every artist, every medium and every technique. Watch this video to learn which of these boards is right for you!
