The ultimate mixed media panel!
Archival and acid-free, Claybord is created by applying Ampersand's patented, archival kaolin clay ground to a True Artist Hardbord substrate, then sanding it to a velvet-smooth, absorbent finish.
Claybord is ideal for ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, casein, egg tempera, airbrush color, collage, photo-transfer, pencil, and pen. The highly responsive surface is perfect for thinly applying and removing colors. You can even scratch through it to add contrast, texture, and fine details. Paint colors remain true and brilliant.
Made from sustainable forest products that ensure the protection of wildlife, plants, soil, and water, Claybord is formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds.
Choose flat panels or cradled panels in a variety of sizes and profiles. Cradled panels allow you to hang your work with no additional framing. The edges are smoothly sanded and ready to be finished if desired.

Love the claybord!

Comments about Ampersand Claybords:
Great product. Works fantasticly. I tried Essbee's scratchbord also, and that product is a total fail. Claybord, on the other hand, is pure quality and a real pleasure to use. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I paint on clapboard with inks and acrylics. It has a wonderful responsive surface allowing clear crisp edges. Easy to remove areas of color and rework. I absolutely love this surface.

I am extremely pleased with how well you wrap these clayboards to protect them during shipping. The care you take to protect the edges and then putting it all in the box for extra protect. 5 star all the way.
Excited to buy more clayboards

I had used Ampersand scratch board before and loved the quality of line. Because scratchboard does not come cradled and is flat, I had contacted Ampersand and had a special order made for me of scratchboard with a 2" cradle. It was perfect but very expensive. Afterwards I realized that clay board is the same surface without the black india ink covering it. I then took the clay board and painted a dark surface using acrylic inks. It came out fantastic and I began to use my scratchboard tools on it. It looks amazing!

Lately I have been using the clayboard with alcohol inks and just love it - the smoothness of the board really plays well with the alcohol inks!!!

Love Me Some Claybord!

I love the smooth surface of Claybord just as much as I adore all of the crazy things I can do with - or on - it. As a mixed media artist my brain is convinced that more is better. It doesn't matter what I do to try to change that - it's in my blood. No matter what I throw, layer, scratch, draw, paint, or adhere to this stuff I get amazing results that just don't happen with other surfaces. I am thoroughly convinced that Claybord puts something in their panels that magically transforms my work into scrumptious eye candy. The panels are sturdy and brilliantly accept every media I choose to use. If you haven't experienced Claybord yet, get ready...you'll never want to use another substrate again. :)

I have used Ampersand Claybord for years.

I have used Claybord for years to mount my watercolors. Abstracts especially show very nicely mounted on Claybord and compared to matting and framing, you cannot beat the price. Quality product.
Ampersand's original and most versatile panel, Claybord, has an ultra-smooth kaolin surface that accepts a wide variety of media. The absorbent surface allows for quick drying time of inks and paint. The real advantage of Claybord is how the surface can be manipulated; ink can be completely erased without affecting the integrity of the surface using Ampersand's oil-free steel wool. Sgraffito techniques can also be used on Claybord, something that cannot be achieved on paper.
Ampersand manufactures a wide variety of archival artist panels. There is a surface for every artist, every medium and every technique. Watch this video to learn which of these boards is right for you!
