Best Brush Pen For Comics and Cartooning
Pros
Cons
Best Uses
Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
I fell in love with this pen right from the very start. It allows you to create a perfect hairline stroke, probably much finer than you could achieve with any Rapidograph or Micron technical pen. I bought a Strathmore Bristol Vellum 6x6 pad (20 sheets) and had such a creative rush after 2 or 3 drawings that I went through the whole pad in less than a week! This is worth the price especially for someone who works in comics or cartooning and get ideas on the go. And here was the best part for me fellow artisians...right near the very end when the cartridge is just about out of ink...the pen starts to produce a gray tone (like a halftone). In a "smudging" sort-of-way, this effect added a nice fine art quality to my final drawings in terms of achieving multiple values, not just the clean black and white graphic effect. In other words...the pen was good to the last drop!

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
This is a great pen. It's comfortable to hold, and the ink flows just right. The only drawback is that because it is so much fun to use, you will draw a lot and run out of ink...so be sure to buy more refills than you think you will need! I mainly use this with a small sketch book for drawing on the bus going to and from work. The marks are great on their own, or sometimes I will add watercolor or oil pastel when I get home. The only complaint is that the ink cartridge gets used up so fast. So, be warned that you will either need refills or an extra pen or two if you plan on drawing a lot while away from home.

Lovely brushpen w/ waterproof ink

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
PROS:
* Ink is waterproof, perfect for watercolors on the go.
* Ink is dark, smooth and dries quickly.
* Sharp, responsive and durable tip produces beautiful results.
* Brush tip is like a top-quality #2 brush that comes to a perfect point.
CONS:
* No control over ink flow. The ink comes out at a steady rate, which is great for writing, but doesn't provide the control I sometimes want for drawing. I have to periodically dab the tip on a paper towel to dry it off for finer work.
You should also consider the Pentel Color Brush, an excellent brushpen that lets you control the flow of the ink by squeezing, but it's thicker and not waterproof. I use that brushpen a more because of its flow control.

Life Altering Pen

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
This pen delivers a wide variety of widths, smooth and consitant with permanent very black ink. The line is not fuzzy even if you hesitate. I'm a watercolorist and this is the only brush tipped pen that I've tried which responds close to a fine round watercolor brush. Buy an extra set of refills; you'll use it more than you expect too. I carry it in my purse along with a (modified) pad of 4x6 cards for sketchng where ever I go. I can't believe every art store isn't carrying this. I'm lost without it.

I love this brush pen

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
This is the brush pen I turn to when writing Chinese/Japanese calligraphy and also any time I am outlining a drawing that requires variable weight lines.
Smooth ink, good flow, nice line variety, great tip size for the work I use it for. The tip is very flexible and responsive.
About the only downside is the length, I have long arms and large hands, and I would feel more comfortable with my hand about an inch or two further up the shaft than this allows using a more traditional grip. Though this is a very minor issue that probably doesn't apply to most users and certainly doesn't change how much I like this brush pen.

Best brush pen and totally waterfast

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
I have seen this pen, until recently not easy to find in this country, reviewed by a variety of artists, and they were unanimous in their praise. I bought one from Blick and i can see why these people consider it such a valuable tool. In my hands, it fairly dances across the paper, making sketching a joy, with a variety of lines and gestural marks available with subtle gradations of pressure and direction. Unlike many brush pens, the resulting marks are absolutely waterproof, so I can add a watercolor wash without muddying the underlying sketch. I try not to leave the house without my traveling sketch kit, and this is definitely part of it. Nice that the replacement cartridges are available too - thanks, Blick!

The Best of The Three

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
I have one of these, a Kaimei and a Kuretake. The Kaimei has the natural hair, the Kuretake bristles like the Pentel. Only the Pentel keeps its perfect tip with the ink I use (Martins Black Star Matte). The Kaimei, the most $$ of the three is a close second and the Kuretake is really not worth the $$, but useful somewhat.
This pen is fantastic, the BEST PRICE of the three. The disposable reservoir is easy to refill with some practice and the right tools...DO NOT believe what you hear regarding problems with them leaking if you do it. Have been doing it for 3 years with the original 2 cartridges it came with and have had no problems.

Comments about Pentel Pocket Brush Pen:
I'm an artist from Houston Texas,I've been using this pen for years. It has totally changed my life, the flexibility of the types of line qualities you can achieve are phenomenal! I've made alot of money off this pen and unless I'm doing really large pieces this is usually the tool of choice for my illustrations. With incredible flow and ink delivery I'd say if you use brush pens, you'd be a fool not to own one of these!
