Enhance details and highlights in a printed photograph. Marshall's Photo Oil Pencils can create many unusual effects in covering a print.
Use them to enhance realism, or even to create surrealism. Turn black-and-white photographic prints into unusual works of art.
Marshall's Photo Oil Pencils are permanent and acid free, guaranteed not to harm photographs or photographic emulsions.
There was a day when hand-coloring photographs was "a portrait thing," and did not venture far from bringing flesh tones to ancient photo plates. Today, much like black‑and‑white photography itself, hand-coloring is a whole new realm to be explored. Marshall's Landscape palette was chosen to bring life to the seas, skies, and ground. The set features a collection of earthtones, including three Greens, two Browns, and Gray. Bright accents, including Red, Yellow, and Orange, bring splashes of color to a field of flowers or fall foliage. And, as with all Marshall's Photo Oil pencils, the colors are easy to blend — or make the colors really flow with a bit of medium. The set contains 12 pre‑sharpened pencils, including one each of White, Yellow, Orange, Red, Navy Blue, Sky Blue, Dark Green, Light Green, Olive, Brown, Sienna, and Gray. (Colors in this set may vary.)
Chosen from a palette of the modern art era, this selection of colors evokes images of mid‑century paintings and the colors of the 1940s and 1950s. They're perfect for wartime photographs, or for recreating the film noir look that is reminiscent of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks." Darker Blues, muted earthtones, Gray, and Black form the deep tones and shadows, while the light colors veer toward sunset colors of Lemon, Orange, and Cherry. This group of pencils offers artists a great range to bring punch to vintage photographs, or to create a new modern masterpiece. The set contains 12 pre‑sharpened pencils, including one each of Basic Flesh, Lemon, Terra Cotta, Mauve, Black, Grey, Royal Blue, Teal Blue, Turquoise, Olive, Tan and Verona Brown. (Colors in this set may vary.)

I only tested the pencils on a small scribbly face the colors seem to be very nice and smooth. Only did a small 5x5 funny face. The colors came out good. Plan to use them at some point next week. The only thing that I wonder about is sharpening the pencils. I have an electric sharpener, that like to eat the wood around the pencils....hope the pencils do well when sharpening! Like the colors. Glad I got them!

Used Marshall oil colors when I was a child.
from New Orleans, LA
My sister worked for Eastman Kodak when photos had to be hand colored with Marshall's oil colors. No color photography then (65 years ago). I was pleased to see that Marshall was still in business. I can't wait to use my oil pencils.

I purchased the pencils to add color to some old photos of my grandparents. The pencils did not work on the photos at all. I tried them on a variety of surfaces but they failed to work on each of them, barely leaving any color at all. Very disappointed.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that these pencils didn't perform well for you. The Marshall's pencils work best on a matte or semi-matte finish. However, since you've tried them on a variety of surfaces, it may be that there is a problem with the pencil set you received. One of our Customer Care Agents will be in touch so we can determine how we can best address this for you.

I put it on black and white photographs and I like it. Maybe I would like the tubes better and when I can afford it I may try those.

Easy to use
I'm only writing this to disclose that these pencils work only on MAT finish papers. So if you intend to color anything other than MAT (this means semi mat / semi gloss as well), they will produce undesirable results. I own a set from the 90's and they still work fine. The label clarifies the substrate type. I'm not sure what the current label says.

Used these for years - great product

I am a photo teacher. My student hand paint their darkroom prints with these. They use non resin coated paper. We also use mineral spirits to dip the tip of the pencil in to make them blend easier. My students love them. Easy clean up and great transparency when applied.

does not work as advertised
I purchased these pencils to color on photographs with. Sadly, they don't do that. The copy says they are for black and white photographs, but they barely leave any color on the (B&W fiber-based) prints I tested them on. I had to press hard enough to leave a embossed mark in the paper surface, and even then if I swiped my thumb over it the color wiped right back off. They appear to be just ordinary colored pencils that Marshall's is calling "photo" and charging a premium for, and since I already have plenty of ordinary colored pencils these are not what I needed. I suppose if you inkjet print all your "photographs" these would work for you as long as you aren't using glossy paper, but they are advertised as coloring *actual* photographs, and they don't do that at all. Very disappointing.
