Lascaux is the best fixative ever. I work in mixed media, and Lascaux allows me to layer with wet and dry media. I can spray to fix charcoal, then do acrylic washs, more charcoal, more fixative, more paint, etc., etc. Absolutely love it.

I use Lascaux with pastel art work. I apply it in a garage so there is no air movement but sufficient ventilation so that the fumes from a fixative is not a problem. From about 18" I apply an even, steady spray and allow it to dry. (Note that the pastel will get very dark when you do this - no worries.) I do this three times to get a good seal on the pastel artwork.

The results are outstanding. The pastels appear unchanged or perhaps just very, very slightly darkened. You can still lift a touch of color with your finger, but your work will no longer flake. It will be ready to frame - without worrying about dust getting on the inside of the glass.

About the only negatives to Lascaux is it's price and odor. It is a product that, when applied correctly, does exactly what is advertised.

I used this product (8 cans) on a 10 foot by 18 foot wall mural out of charcoal and nu-pastel. I hadn't worked in charcoal or pastel in quite a long time. But since I was committing to such a large project I wanted to use what seemed to be the best product. I couldn't bear losing any of the drawing I had taken so long to complete.

In the past I used any brand, but learned you always start with a fine mist and let it fall from a distance. Since this mural was done on plaster and the can said it sealed on plaster I thought this the best product.

I started out with a fine mist and built up on the forth coat to spraying from a distance of about six inches. It took at least four coats to seal it. It was not the single coat the can suggested. But thats okay. I expected that since I have such a careful technique.

In the end it did work with one exception! Part of the landscape that I had done ended up being done with different basecoat blacks. The basecoat on the left was done in dense charcoal. The basecoat on the right done several weeks later was done in black nu-pastel. That was my error. As I built up layers of color in nu-pastel I finshed with a soft shadow of charcoal. This is a night drawing and casted a gentle shadow.

Problem was when I sprayed both of them, the landscape on the right based in black nu-pastel ABSORBED the soft shadow of charcoal. It took me a few minutes to notice, but it had disapeared on the right. Odd. I think it had to do with the black nu-pastel just as much as it did with the fixative. It did not ruin the piece, but it gave it an appearance I did not count for.

All in all I think this is an excellent product. Althought, in the past i have been pretty successful with being careful with other product.

I have not used another fixative on my pastels in years for fear of changing the colors. I have used this on two pastel paintings and have seen absolutely no change in color at all, but it has nicely reduced flaking and dusting of the pastels. I am surprisingly pleased.

Just used it a couple of times. I wanted something to use with Watercolor on YUPO paper. Has some fumes. If you spray outside it's great.
