Welcome to dickblick
Responding to popular demand, Derwent expanded its initial range of six earthy colors, first introduced in 1986, into a glorious palette of 24 subtle shades. These include soft greens, blues, grays, and creams plus a wider choice of traditional sepia tones, making them ideal for a wide range of subjects.
Derwent Drawing Pencils are 8 mm in diameter with soft, thick, round leads that have a creamy consistency, making it easy to apply and produce a rich, velvety finish on the paper. The soft, extra wide 5mm strip is ideal for blending and encourages loose, expressive drawings with subtle tonal transitions. Colors can be quickly laid down in wide to thin applications. Pencils are pre-sharpened.
These pencils bring color to life — from sweeping landscapes and seascapes to detailed, vibrant wildlife drawings, nature studies, and portraiture.

The perfect drawing pencil for anatomy and drawing from life
By Sarah Adkins SVFX
from Wichita Falls, TX
Comments about Derwent Drawing Pencils:
I use this to do life drawings, study anatomy, and really appreciate that these can be purchased through open stock. The pigment can be varied on newspaper to be faint lines or have very thick buildup. The Sanguine, Sepia, Ivory Black, and Chinese white are fantastic on Newspaper. I can't stand charcoal but these are much better. While charcoal is crumbly, dry, and a huge mess these are a much better match for my needs. After ordering the Ivory Black for a drawing course I had to get a few other colors. The points are a bit softer than others but the lead is thick, will take pressure, and the colors are beautiful. I bring one of each with me on my daily commute to draw. I will definitely order other colors in the future. I used to dread human anatomy studies because of the heavy use of charcoal. These drawing pencils are much better if you would prefer something that is the opposite.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Gives amazing coverage in colored pencil drawings

The Chinese White in these pencils is the brightest white color on the market in my opinion. Use it to mark on top of any part of the picture that needs a bright white highlight, or a bold punch of color.

I really like these pencils and didn't think I would :) They give a lot of options especially for drawing on the go with little to carry - really nice colors and I can get a lot of range of value with them
Best of British
The China white is a must have in any serious artists arsenal.

not as good for landscape sketches as I'd hoped
By Suz the watercolor pencil dabbler

As a landscape and nature sketcher I was attracted to the subtle earth tones of these pencils. But I normally use watercolor pencils, whether I end up wetting them or not. It was unclear to me what sort of pencils these were. So when I got my set of 12 I experimented. They must really be oil pencils, as there is no real response to water. They also don't really seem to layer very well - all that creamy texture they advertise just lays down a heavy coat and underneath colors are obscured. The colors are still of interest to me, but I also found that they were even less colorful than I'd thought. For example, the light blue is actually too light and unsaturated to use for a sky. And the dark blue is so grayed that it would only do certain types of water, not all. The greens are similarly problematic for foliage. So while these are an interesting addition to my kit, I'm not going to be a convert for my landscape sketches.

Derwent drawing pencils
from Boynton beach, Florida
I got the full set of derwent drawing pencils. It really have every color you need to do any kind of landscape drawing or coloring books that have animals or landscape. I love coloring birds especially egrets and I find the color range in the full set is wonderful. This set has colors that I can't find in prismacolor pencils or Faber castell polychromos. I find the colors pale cedar, crag green, and green shadows excellent for trees and shadowing on trees. Solowaw blue is the perfect muted blue that is difficult to find elsewhere. These pencils are great for drawing fur as well. They have the ability to make thin or broad strokes. I added prismacolor grays as well to add to this collection. Because the grays in the derwent drawing pencils almost have a greenish tone to it. The purples; Mars violet and ruby earth are also interesting colors. I find with these thick pencils covering large areas is much quicker in comparison to prismacolor and polychromos pencils. The only thing I was surprised was the smell these pencils have so I am grateful I bought the set so I can keep it in its case instead of individual pencils. Also the case is perfect for storing these pencils because they're thick and don't fit my other storage for my other pencils. I think the price is a bargain for the color range you get in the full set.

I couldn't ask for more from a pencil
I use this for sketches and finished drawings, and the buttery black texture you get from dense marks is incredible. Has great potential in its ability to get dark fast, letting you play with tones in a flexible manner.
