Comments about Derwent Graphitint Pencils:

These are the oddest pencils but for some reason I find them fascinating. They are water-soluable graphite with some color mixed in. They look different dry and wet. Overall, they are great sketching pencils with a nice smooth texture. I use them in my sketchbook and think they are geared more toward studies and sketching rather than a finished painting. The colors are all low-chroma/shades of grey, as you would expect from graphite. The quality is excellent, as one would expect from Derwent.

I expect great things from Derwent pencils as I have been using a variety of their pencils for many years w/ great results. Picked these up and thought that sentiment would continue. Nope!

Like Mei Lin commented, these pencils are nothing like graphite. I expected a colored graphite pencil combo, and instead got a watercolor pencil with colors that don't move me at all. The colors are very muted w/ no punch at all. (Derwent Inktense are a another story and highly recommended.)

I'm not making this judgment rashly because I've pulled out these pencils - say five times or more times since I bought them - to give them another chance. And each time I'm left with "Meh."

Derwent, you could do better.

I just dibble-dabble in art, I purchased the 24 set and I love them. Dull colors for just drawing or sketching, and then bringing a wet paintbrush to them brings out the colors tenfold. I now have the tools, now I just need to get better!

I haven't had my set for very long or used them that much but so far, for the most part, they are really nice pencils. They offer more color than you would expect from a primarily graphite pencil and they add a nice effect to sketches. I don't like them with my colored pencil work though because of the noticeable graphite "shine" to them, which is to be expected but isn't really something I desire in my colored pencil.

I have done one sketch solely with these pencils. You have to be careful about your color selection, I would recommend that you make a test sheet of each color before starting or you may end up with some unexpected results.

I received a set of six of these as a freebie in another package that I purchased. Immediately, I fell in love with them, loving the soft tinted graphite that could add just a hint of color in my graphite drawings. When wet, these pencils can cover a broad range from lightly tinted watercolor washes to rich, bold brightness without being really garish in color. It does take some practice when using them wet, but it's worth the effort. BTW, after playing with my six freebies I ordered the set of 24.

The first thing you MUST do with these pencils is make a color chart showing how each color looks dry and wet. I refer to it constantly. These pencils work beautifully for drawing subjects in an earthtone pallet. A few of the colours are quite bright when wet so that's where the colour chart will help. It's also possible to blend colours together to get any shades that aren't available. I love these pencils. Minor downsides: too many gray shades, pencils are quite soft like 4B so a sharp line is difficult.

I love certain colors of the Graphitint line for working both dry and wet - Midnight Black, Storm, etc. Some of the colors, though, turn garish when wet, with an undertone that separates oddly, and can look almost nothing like the color one gets when using the pencil dry! So, be sure to try the colors wet before you do anything irrevocable (like putting water on them).

For me, these are pencils to use dry, for the most part. They have really attractive working qualities. For the Midnight Black in particular, the value range is excellent and the pencil is as richly pigmented as I could ever ask. It is also velvety soft without seeming at all break-prone. It lifts up from HP watercolor paper very easily with a kneaded rubber eraser. And it isn't bad at all in re: smudging, and you can get a very faint line that can easily "disappear" - as well as rich deep darks. I love it.

Last but not least, the colors that don't have some bizarre neon-colored undertone separating out, are a lot of fun to play with. These pencils give a much more sensitive, reworkable result than normal aquarelle pencils, and the slightly satin-y graphite finish is a bonus, in my book. Just be careful which colors you use.

The description of this product on the Blick site and the Derwent site (likely the origin of the Blick text) says "Derwent Graphitint Pencils combine the character of a graphite pencil with a hint of color." This is definitely misleading. These pencils do not blend/erase like graphite. They are much more like watercolor pencils. I will use these pencils as watercolor pencils, but the overall recommendation is reflective of the error in the description.

I'm a graphite pencil portrait artist. I don't like regular colored pencils, they seem too waxy for me. I read about these, so I thought I'd give them a try, dry, because I hear they can work like water color pencils if wet. I have been adding a touch of color to my regular graphite drawings and have gotten great reviews! They blend very well with stumps, blending marker and even your fingers. I highly recommend these great pencils!
