Art board gesso
By Peter the Painter
Comments about Art Boards Acrylic Panel Gesso:
I`ve tried Art board gesso mainly because I need an absorbent surface, at least more absorbent than the usual acrylic gessos. If a traditionnal gesso ( chalk and rabbitskin glue )is rated 10, in terms of absorbency, Art gesso board would be scaled around 5. Easily sandable, very concentrated, a good buy! I would recommend it!

Probably my favorite gesso
from Canton, OH
This gesso caught my attention because their website said that it was absorbent, and thus could take watercolors...so I purchased it for experimentation and it does indeed take inks and watercolors pretty well...better than the Golden Absorbent Ground, actually. I haven't done much more than a sample painting as of yet, but my first impressions leave me very pleased. Even if I weren't buying this for the specific purpose of watercolor, I find the creamy consistency and easy coverage of this product to easily have become my favorite for gesso.

I use this product not as a base for painting but as a base coat for texturing and coloring art forms I create on the lathe. Great product to work with, handles well and time between application and drying allows more than ample time for me to achieve desired texture.
Best acrylic gesso on the market.
A bit pricey, but worth it, as it's the best acrylic primer for panels. Can be sanded to a perfectly smooth, hard surface. Great for priming panels for acrylic or oil. Easy clean up. Wish Blick's stocked larger sizes than 4 ounce cans - 4 ounces doesn't go that far. Blick's used to stock more Art Boards products at retail locations. Did they decide to market their own, inferior products, instead?
Like working on satin!

Pre applying this gesso makes my paints adhere and glide over the canvas!

Acrylic Panel Gesso 32 oz
By Ann the Artist
The 32-ounce container arrived from Blick only half-filled with gesso. The container was packed well, and the container did not leak during shipment. I called the manufacturer (not Blick), and after a 10-minute conversation, I was told that I would be receiving a replacement jar.I went ahead and used a portion of the half-filled container on a masonite board. It was the consistency of globby, half-dried house paint, not the thick, paste-like substance that I have used in the past. I did receive a jar from the manufacturer. It was a 16-ounce container to make up for the missing product from the initial, half-filled container that arrived from Blick. What would have been nice was if the manufacturer had sent a 32-ounce replacement container especially since the product in the half-filled container turned out to be inadequate. I have not re-contacted the manufacturer concerning the poor quality substance within the half-filled container.I plan on ordering a different product in lieu of this one. This one lacks quality control.

This gesso is probably the closest (but still different) from the traditional gesso of rabbitskin glue + whiting type that I make for iconographic works. Art Boards gesso goes on smoothly, and is easier to sand smooth than most acrylic gessos. I had to, however, add a bit of distilled water to adjust its consistency to heavy cream, just like traditional gesso. After each layer is dry, I would lightly wet sand the gesso surface to eliminate brush marks and ridges. After all layers I dried and wet sanded, I then dry sand the final layer with a very fine sandpaper to an egg shell finish. I would recommend this gesso to iconographers and egg tempera artists who need an acrylic gesso that is easy to sand and is somewhat more absorbent than the run-of-the-mill acrylic gesso. Adding a small amount of marble dust dispersed in water (2 portions marble dust and 1.5 portions water) to the gesso (1 part marble mixture to 5 parts gesso) to make it even more sandable. One caveat here for the buyer is that this gesso is specifically made for rigid supports, so I would not use it for stretched canvases.
