The toolkits are essential
from Camberwell Victoria Australia
The Ampersand Toolkits are essential for my students as I give them out with a small scratchboard as a "starter" kit. The students find the toolkits great, they can choose what they want to use, and some use all of the products, some just stick with the blades until they feel ready. I wish I could get these in Australia, they are, in my view, essential.

A value pack of mediocre tools
I've been making scratchboard illustrations for decades using Hunt 112 and 113 scratch knives, and thought I'd try this Ampersand kit. Overall, I'm disappointed. The blades for the scratch knife aren't as good as the Hunt blades; they seem to be made of softer metal. The pointy blade is a less ergonomic shape than the Hunt 112, and the curved blade is huge step down in functionality from the spoon-shaped Hunt 113. The twisty wire brush looked like it would be great for random, natural looking textures, but the wires are so stiff that they only scratch one way on each side, and they make deep gouges in the clay substrate which preclude ever re-working an area. The multi-pointed tool gives a nice parallel line texture. It cuts a little deep too if you're not careful. The fiberglass brush leaves little bits of fiberglass everwhere if you're not careful. (and after that you'd better be careful, getting fiberglass in your fingertips or worse yet your eye is very bad) And, weirdly, the fiberglass bristles on the brush are glued together, so once the tip of the brush has been shattered off after a few uses you're left with a rigid abrasive stick which is utterly useless. The glue binding the bristles is water soluble, but you'll ruin your surface if you use the tool wet, and once the brush is dry again it's all stuck together again. It's utterly disappointing, because the fiberglass brush has such potential for delicate lightening of tone. I guess that's why they include the steel wool too.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your candid comments. We're sorry that the tools in this set were not what you expected. Although the blades are made of the same metal as the Hunt blades and there is no glue on the fiberglass, we understand that all artists have unique expectations of the tools they use, and these clearly did not meet your expectations. We hope you'll reach out to our Product Information Team at 1-800-933-2542 (weekdays 8am to 5:30pm CST) or info @dickblick.com. They can work with you to determine what tools might work better for you, or refer you to videos that might help you use the Ampersand tools to better advantage.

Excellent starter kit to get into Claybord pen and ink
from New Hampshire
The scratchboard starter kit is exactly what you need to get started in Scratchboard / claybord. The sample un-inked clayboard by Amersand allowed me to evaluate the artform. I have included the piece I created using this kit.

Love this tool!
from Loon Lake, WA
This is one of my favorite tools for my scratchboard work. It is versatile depending on how you use it (i.e. angle, pressure used, etc.) and one I use in many different situations because of that versatility. I have recommended it to others.

Ampersand Scratchbord is a professional grade scratchboard and the choice of artists looking for a rigid acid-free surface that will not tear, puncture crack, or bend. Scratchbord's surface has a smooth, absorbent kaolin clay ground that is evenly coated with India ink. You can scratch easily into this surface with controlled, crisp, clean lines to create exquisitely detailed white-on-black art.
