Additives are not considered mediums. Acrylic mediums are polymer resins that can be mixed with paint in any quantity, while additives can be added in only limited quantities without affecting the ultimate drying and curing of the paint surface. Follow the directions for use carefully.

Gel Mediums are used to alter the viscosity of acrylic paint, extend color, increase translucency, and enhance or reduce gloss. Gels range in consistency from soft body to extra heavy body giving artists a wide range of options – from minimal texture to dramatic impasto techniques. They are great for creating gel transfers and can be used as an adhesive. Gel mediums are milky white when wet, but dry to a clear, flexible film.

Glazing Mediums are liquid polymer resins that, when mixed with paints, provide a smooth, fluid application. These mediums will enhance the paint finish, extend color, and increase translucency. Glazing mediums are milky when wet, but dry to a very transparent finish.

Leveling and Pouring Mediums

Leveling and Pouring Mediums create puddles and sheets of color that retain their high gloss and appear wet even when dry. They are for use with fluid and soft body acrylics.

Molding/Modeling Pastes

Molding and Modeling Pastes are extremely thick and can hold large peaks and structure. Unlike gels, molding and modeling pastes are opaque white when wet as well as dry, so color will be altered when mixing with paint – however, pastes can also be used as a textural foundation under acrylic paints. Molding and Modeling pastes come in a range of viscosity as well as hardness.

Polymer Mediums are used to reduce the viscosity of acrylic paint, extend color, increase translucency, and enhance or reduce gloss. This liquid acrylic medium is viscous, yet pourable, and, when mixed with regular or heavy body acrylics, will thin the paint without reducing the integrity of the paint film. Polymer mediums are excellent for glazing techniques as it promotes flow and diminishes texture. It is also a wonderful adhesive and perfect for collage. And, like other acrylic mediums, it can be mixed with all other acrylic paints and mediums (with the exception of varnishes). Polymer mediums are milky when wet but dry to a clear finish.

Texture Gels, mortars, and grounds are gel mediums to which texturing elements such as sand, grit, pumice, or glass beads have been added.
