Unlike watercolor brushes, oil brushes, and most other paintbrushes, Sumi brushes are composed of two separate parts. Yasutomo’s Bamboo Calligraphy Brush is no exception.
The central core of this brush, which determines its height and basic function, is composed of relatively stiff hairs gathered to form a tapered point. The outer wrapping consists of softer hairs that have been selected for their ability to hold water and facilitate smooth strokes.
The hairs of the inner core and the outer wrapping are the same length and come to a point when dipped into water.
The hair structure of the Yasutomo Bamboo Calligraphy Brush ensures smooth maneuverability and dynamic strokes when both light or heavy pressure are applied.

Awesome brush for the price!
from Port Orange, FL
I use this brush along with Speedball inks for drawing. The brush holds sooo much ink! I did almost an entire drawing of a model with one dip. I then wash it out in some water, but keep a bit of ink in it, and with this do the greyed shadows. The tip holds nicely and you can vary the lines with the twist of your arm - from very thin lines to more broad lines or strokes. For the price, this is awesome! I bought almost the whole line, but the #3 is probably enough for medium sized drawings.

Not So Great
from Manhattan, New York
I bought this in the store thinking I could use this for inking, however the first time I used the brush a lot of hairs fell out and they keep sticking out giving not much precision for filling in areas with ink. At this point, I am still looking for a better alternative. Overall, this product is not worth the price I paid.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Yasutomo Calligraphy Brush
from Portland, Or
Bought a number of these brushes for an intro to calligraphy class. A few of the brushes had to be completely replaced for the students because so much of the hair fell out. All of the brushes had problems with hair coming out
