Not good for what i wanted it for...

Comments about X-Acto Compass Cutter:
I wanted to like this product...I wanted to be able to round corners on magnetic sign material. i can't get it to even stay in place to draw an arc, let alone attempt to cut through anything. Just very cheaply made, no strength/stability. You would need about 3 hands, one to hold the base with enough downforce to keep the needle in place, and two to try to guide the blade in an arc to keep it from wavering. I will continue to hand cut them as I have all along, and may try to buy something else down the road, but this is going in the trash.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Inexpensive circle cutter -
from Omaha, Nebraska
I have a $200 gasket cutter that cuts thick materials nicely but won't cut small circles in acetate or stencil film easily. I needed something that would cut stencil circles so I got this. It works - but it isn't heavy enough so it slips easily. You have to be careful and go over the work a couple of times while holding the center still. It would work fine on paper and probably OK on 3 mil or thinner acetate. Easy to figure out so it is still in my 'useful stuff' drawer. It was stamped from plastic - a metal version would probably work much better. Cutter blade is hard to find - would be better if it used a #11 blade. Having said all that, it is probably one of the better 'cheap' solutions available.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Worth at least what it costs

Like many tools, this one requires some skill and patience if you want good results. Realistically, it's a good enough deal for the money, but it's not a high-grade precision tool. I use this to cut circular stencils out of manila file folders. Manila is a bit tough and it's really at about the limit of what the blade in this tool can handle. It takes many many passes with a very light, well controlled touch, to make a satisfactory cut. I estimate it takes me about 4-5 minutes to cut one 4" circle. And remember, unlike with a compass for drawing, this requires both hands on the tool, you won't have a free hand to hold down the workpiece, so the material being cut needs to be taped or otherwise held in place during cutting. Overall, this tool is fine in that it gives me the results I need, but it requires a lot of effort in terms of patience and craft to get those results. If you don't have the patience, and won't or cant't acquire the skill, do not buy this. If you understand that you need to approach the tool with realistic expectations, you won't be disappointed with it.

Went to Blick to get a craft punch and they didn't have one. An associate recommended this product and it is complete junk! The center point protector slips off the paper so you instantly lose your center spot as soon as you spin the tool. Also, the ratchet knob on mine is stuck in it's place, so even if I did decide to keep it, it would be stuck on it's current setting. Horrible product- taking it back to Blick tomorrow!
