Winsor & Newton Dammar Varnish (the American spelling is "damar") is a traditional, pale yellow varnish that dries quickly to a high gloss for use on oil and alkyd paintings. It is traditionally used on prints and maps. Dammar Varnish tends to darken with age.

Winsor & Newton Dammar Varnish add beauty to my paintings
from Las Vegas, NV
Comments about Winsor & Newton Dammar Varnish:
Brushing a coat of Dammar Varnish to my oil painting is a little like magic. The Varnish brightens and intensifies the colors. The high-gloss sheen add depth and a character of professionalism that just isn't there with unvarnished dull paints. I've been putting W & N Dammar Varnish to all my paintings for over seventeen years. That's about 350 paintings. By the way, I always by the biggest can available; it's the best value.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I only use W&N Dammar Varnish to make the colors come alive in all my oil paintings. And the large can at Dick Blick is the best value. Prompt shipping too.

I always recommend Dammar varnish as the last step in finishing an oil painting. It preserves the painting by protecting it from dirt. It is easily removed with turpentine. The first time I had to remove Dammar varnish I was nervous, however, to my surprise it was easily removed without damage to the underlying oil.The biggest benefit is to give the paintings surface a unified professional look.

The Winsor Newton products, turpentine, Damar varnish and linseed oil make the best glazing medium for doing faux painting methods such as ragging and stippling. Tried other products and when added to commercial oil base paints, separate on the wall.
Will definitely buy this product agin.
