This handy, lightweight tool is a must for every painter's utility kit. It helps artists determine composition, crop images, and identify color values. The ViewCatcher is constructed of neutral gray #5 durable plastic and has a small sight opening, to aid in viewing "true" color.
Adjust the window opening to help find the perfect composition, oriented horizontally, vertically, or in a square format. Five calibrations aid in finding that perfect proportion:

Comments about Create-A-Color Wheel ViewCatcher:
This is a great little tool with a solid build. I purchased this hoping it would hold up to hard hiking and plein air. No worries about that. In a second you'll have the exact proportion of your paper available to overlay the subject. I also like the neutral color, plus the holes for color matching. I started carrying it in my day bag to practice observing on days when I won't have time to paint.

I could not do the painting I do, from landscapes indoors and outdoors, to still life's to portraits without a Viewcatcher. I recommend all my students have at least one in their art materials.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

As a painter, I needed a product that would simplify the landscapes so I could pull the composition together easily and quickly. The viewfinder is compact, easy to use and so reasonably priced.

One big, critical flaw
By Art Lover
from Los Angeles, CA
Great idea except this doesn't produce a true square or rectangle view. Two corners are rounded whereas the other two are perfectly square. So, I'm not sure if the name of the shape it creates but it's not a square or rectangle. This may work for some but it drives me crazy. A pity as this critical (and obvious) design flaw makes what would otherwise have been a helpful product more or less worthless.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use my viewcatcher for every painting I do, indoors or out. From scene selection to proportioning sketch , to transposing to painting surface, it's terrific.

Nice but overpriced.

Expensive. I wanted something for my students.
Simple and effective
from Cape Cod, Massachusetts
I use this most when painting from life - either plien air landscapes or from a model or still life. I love that the different support dimensions are marked so you can match the proportions to those of your canvas. Very inexpensive but simple and very helpful. AND takes up so little room I can easily toss it into my small plien air pochade box. There are other view finders with cross hairs, grids, etc but they usually take up more space and for me, this is all I need 90% of the time. If I ever need more than that, I use an app on my iPhone.
Great little view finder. Very handy to have

Handy Composition Help
My landscape instructor recommended this light-weight tool for on-site drawings to help select a portion of the landscape to draw. He was right that the plethora of choice can be overwhelming. This portable tool made it easier to focus on composition.
Plein Air Painting Essential!
By Tree Painter
from Eagle Point, Oregon
As a Plein Air Painter, I use a view catcher every time I work outdoors. This tool makes it easier to get a good composition. The view catcher can be adjusted to whatever size canvas or paper I am using. It can also be helpful in the studio when looking at a photograph before cropping and also used for sizing a thumbnail sketch. It also helps judge value. Clear instructions explain everything. I never go anywhere without my view finder. In fact I have two, one for the glove box in the car and one in my painting bag!
