A good-quality brush with black bristles and a wood handle, the Varnish and Chip Brush is great for applying oil-based paints, stains, and enamels.

Quality not worth it

Comments about Varnish and Chip Brush:
I used these brushes in a gel medium and was constantly pulling bristles off my painting. Very dissappointed and frustrating. I immediately threw them away. Not worth using.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not a good choice for applying varnish
from Madison, WI
The most unhelpful quality a varnishing brush can have is losing bristles onto the painting surface and this brush is a champion bristle-dropper. I quit using them and bought a high-quality varnishing brush from a hardware store. Yes, this brush is inexpensive and a good varnishing brush costs twice to three times as much, but seriously, the frustration of picking out bristles makes that price difference unimportant.

Pretty good for the price...
from Whidbey Island
Have been using these to apply varnish to a boat... they are surprisingly good, supple, brushes for the price. I work the bristles a bit before I start to ensure that any loose bristles fall out ahead of time. I am really quite pleased with these, they are a step up from foam brushes, with the wonderful feel of true bristle.

A decent brush I am using to apply gesso. Initially using the product I had to work the bristles quite a bit so all the loose ones wouldn't end up on my primed canvas. This took a good five minutes and I ended up with a nice pile bristles that had fallen out but well worth it as I haven't had a single stray one on my primed surfaces.
A very fine brush for its type
from Celo, NC
This is a very high quality brush. Not the type of brush that I wanted for scrubbing in an underpainting. Don't buy this brush if you want a nasty one with sparse bristles that fall out onto your canvas! I will be using this brush for much more elegant big work.
