I don't recommend this paper.
Comments about Strathmore 400 Series Pastel Paper Pads:
For soft pastel the texture is too much, it's hard or rather impossible to get a smooth finish. it gives a textured finish making it difficult to do the details..i'm having to do a watercolor underpainting first, then pastel over it to get the smoothness...for colored pencil the texture maybe good enough with mineral spirit, still i can't get as many layers as compared to canson 1557 85lb paper( which i used before for CP) . and the thickness is also a problem when doing colored pencil. you can make amazing CP drawings with that thickness but its difficult and rather a waste when there are much better papers for both CP and Pastel for quite similar price range.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This textured paper allows better coverage than regular paper or construction paper. For my younger students, this is a much better lower priced option.

I love this paper. It is perfect for charcoal art. The results are always excellent, and I have no complaints!

Pretty darn good
from columbus, ohio
I like the variety of the products and the open box pastels. Really like the unison soft pastels the colors are unique and gorgeous but they are pricey and break fairly easily so I'll probably combine with nupastels. getting used to assorted colors of pastel paper I like it.
Really cool texture and colors

Not bad at all
from long island, ny
Tried these out on sale and they were good to use for my daily practice - not my favorite paper but a good combination of color and tooth - I would use it for my main choice however.

Quality surface for pastels for a bargain price
from Pacific Coast
I gave this 5 stars because it is excellent quality for a much lower price than many other pastel papers. Compared to really high end pastel supports such as pastel board, it's more like 4 stars, but those are absurdly expensive. This paper has a lovely, natural, moderate texture. Enough tooth to take multiple layers of pastel if it is not applied super-heavy. It is sturdy and can take blending and wiping off of pastel numerous times. It takes hard pastels, soft pastels, and pastel pencils. It comes in several lovely shades, but I would prefer to be able to buy individual sheets of the colors I use the most, as well as to buy very large sheets. For the outstanding performance and very reasonable price of this paper, it is an excellent choice.I will try to attach an example in which I used all three of these pastel types on this paper.
