This solvent-based, lead-free paint was the best-kept secret of faux finishers. Now, the secret is out.
Japan colors have a luscious matte surface, a heavy pigment load, and pure rich colors. Their semi-paste consistency makes them perfect for stenciling. They can be thinned to make stains or glazes, or added to glossy oil-based paint to create semi-gloss finishes and soft tints. Use them for antiquing, graining, lettering, striping, scenic design, and furniture finishes.
These flat, quick drying colors excel in purity, tone uniformity, strength, and fineness of grind. Lead free. Thin with mineral spirits.
Ronan Blacks — To help in your selection, here is a bit of information about the various Ronan blacks. Drop Black has a slightly brown shade to it. Refined Lamp Black is most often used as a mixing or shading black. Solid-covering Lamp Black is the most highly pigmented color and is used when doing lettering or in situations where the most opaque pigment is desired.

Comments about Ronan Superfine Japan Colors:
I am a professional wooden duck decoy carver and have used Ronan Japan Colors for many years and very much like using these products. Generally, they are consistent in color and quality but the Chrome Yellow O in this order was not a vibrant as in the past.Additional, I was disappointed with the packaging of the products. The quart cans were loosely placed in the boxes and banged together, with no separation/ packing material between them. To the point that some of the cans were badly dented and with one can the lid had actually opened, spilling some of the paint. They had no lid clips on the cans.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The One and Only
By Paint Town Signs
from Lexington, KY
I use japan color in my sign business any time I need a flat and earthy finish, or to mix with gloss enamels to create a satin finish. They remind me of painting with an oil-based tempera and are great for working on paper, wood, or painted chalkboard applications where a flat and quick drying finish is preferable- Their thick and pasty texture is great for faux antiquing and dry brushed lettering applications and they can be mixed with other paints and binders to improve the flow for specific jobs. Another use I have found for the black in particular is as a general wood finish- thinned a bit and rubbed down after 30-60 minutes will produce a shiny waxy surface that accentuates the quality of coarse grained woods instead of coating them like a proper paint would. My only warning to others is that some of the colors are not super vibrant and others just non-existent (emerald green, bright purples, pinks etc.) but like I say, flat and earthy is their forte and they do that well.

I've never used this product before but it was recommended by a friend for an outdoor project. The color is absolutely gorgeous . Quick drying, a little sanding required between coats. No problems with delivery. Have been very happy with products and prices @ Dick Blicks.
quality superfine Japan color
from Estes Park, Colorado
We have been using Ronan Japan colors for over 70 years and the quality is still very good given so many changes in paints. In recent years the pigment has stayed in suspension so we can use all of the paint without worry of waste. This ultramarine blue is rich and great for mixing and blending as well. Thanks for keeping it in stock.
Love this paint!

Heavily Pigmented Paint
By Colonial Style
from Advance, NC
Although oil based, this paint is nothing like the cheaper alkyd oil paints similar to Rustoleum. This is a heavily pigmented paint that is almost like pudding. It dries to a beautiful matte finish that works wonderfully for colonial style furniture such as Windsor chairs. It can also be added to gloss paints to create your own semi gloss finish.
Great paint, lousy odor
Pros: Dries incredibly fast to a luscious, opaque matte finish. I typically use this paint underneath 1-Shot and alongside it for a nice matte-gloss contrast effect.Cons: Very strong odor, which is similar to that of other solvents, but it has a tendency to linger and spread much more. If you're painting inside, expect the whole house or studio to have the odor, and for quite a while. Also, this paint is very thick, and if not used regularly, it will separate into a huge glob at the bottom of the can. Some cans arrive in that condition, depending on how long they were on the shelf. When this occurs, the paint can be restored, but a lot of intense mixing is involved.
You need to be more careful packing
from Lyme, CT
This fast drying oil based paint is magic for painting on glass, and I imagine other surfaces too. I just love it for its rich pigmentation. But Dick Blick needs to be more careful packing it for shipping. My big jar of Flake White paint came with the lid partially off and paint spilled out into the box. I would've returned, but I needed to use it right away. They need to make sure the lids are firmly on before shipping.

good quality colors, TERRIBLE Shipping
from portland, or
The colors are quite strong smelling of the fast drying solvent, they dry quickly and matte, so wonderful for stenciling etc.HOWEVER...... HAVING THEM SHIPPED FROM BLICK WAS A MISTAKE. The cans I received were thrown, on their sides, in a box with NO padding. One leaked and two were totally dented from being thrown around. I would advise not buying them online, but perhaps only in a Blick store where you can trust that they will go home with you unharmed. I was not impressed with Blick's customer service, though I got a replacement -- packed the same way. Unbelievable. My NO recommendation is based only on the quality of packing and customer service. The actual superfine japan color products in themselves are the best you can get.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
