Welcome to dickblick
This remarkably versatile drawing medium combines the rich blackness of a charcoal pencil with the smooth control of a graphite pencil.
Less abrasive than charcoal pencils, Ritmo Charcoal Drawing Pencils create intense lines and rich, dark tones, allowing unlimited freedom of expression.

Comments about Art Alternatives Ritmo Charcoal Drawing Pencils:
As you can see in the attached picture, the pencil on the top is the old Ritmo "Made in Italy" with a rounded end. This is a great pencil. The pencil on the bottom is the new one I bought at my local Blick store here in the East Bay a couple weeks ago. Gone is the "Made in Italy" replaced with "Art Alternatives" and no rounded end. The old one makes deep rich lines and flows across the paper. The new ones vary in quality from semi-rich to down-right unusable. They all scratch across the paper. Terrible and inconsistent. To be clear: I am an artist and educator and have used Ritmo pencils in the past for many years. I will not buy this product again. Nor will I recommend them to my students and colleagues. Blick should discontinue this product.Note to Blick's Third Party Customer Service: Don't bother emailing me a response to this post. Just look into finding a pencil that lives up to the old Ritmo.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Ritmo Charcoal Pencils

This is still by far my favorite charcoal pencil. Because of its quality of soft to hard, I can always expect to get not only fine light lines but great soft textures and blending.

No the old Ritmo
By Mo the Bro
from Olympia, WA
The old Ritmo pencil was one of a kind, and this new company just ruined it. This is just a copy of Primo pencil, overpriced and nothing more than a glorified General"s pencil. The quality was horrible, and the charcoal was broken at multiple placed from the inside, so there was no sharpening it with a razor or a sharpener. My suggestion to the manufacturer is to go back to the original recipe and have some quality control. I tried it multiple times.. always a disappointment, but NEVER again. I think that ART ALTERNATIVE , should find an alternative business than art if this is the quality that they are providing artists.

Good, but nothing unusual
from Los Angeles
I was sorely tempted to give this product three stars instead of four just because of the overhype these pencils recieve, but that would be perhaps misleading because they *are* a top quality product -they're just no better or or even any different than competing products."...blacker than other charcoal penicils...more control..."Non-sense.I'm sory but this is nonsense. They're about on par with General's regular old orange label pencils, only frankly a little grittier and not as black. They handle a little differently, but not nearly enough that I have any clue which drawings I did with the one or the other.Again, if all you want is a standard well made charcoal pencil, these will do just fine. But what they emphatically are not is unique or unusual. If you want a "special purpose" charcoal pencil, I'd recommend trying Wolff's carbon, which holds a point better than graphite and is extremely pressure sensitive, or, at the other extreme, Derwent charcoal pencils, which handle almost like a pastel pencil and instead of being graded by hardness are graded light, medium, and dark.
the darkest and smoothest out there
from richmond virginia
Hands down the darkest of all the charcoal pencils, Ritmos are a must for REALLY laying in the black areas. I use them in combination with the Derwent charcoal pencils which aren't nearly as dark, but are better for detail work. The Ritmos come in HB, B and 3b, however there isn't that much difference in darkness between them and so I usually go for the 'harder' of the three since the harder ones are easier to sharpen without breakage...

Finest Dark Charcoal Pencil Ever Made
By Zen Mountain
I use charcoal, graphite and carbon pencils with vine charcoal and Wolff's carbon sticks in a lot of drawings. The darkness, richness and smoothness of the Art Alternatives Ritmo Charcoal Pencils is unquestionably the very best!Other pencils require a little more force to lay down color but these do not. When using textured paper I find the color lays in nicely and almost effortlessly on the tooth. They are inexpensive pencils and allow me to move as quickly as I would like, instead of getting hung up in how well they are doing. They also seem to be very consistant in texture. Great pencils!
Ritmo Charcoal Pencil
This is the best by far of any charcoal pencil. I would never use anything else. It won't crumble when sharpened and gives me rich lines every time.

Right now Im using this pencil to draw portraits. I think it goes pretty smooth on Canson, Strathmore and Blick drawing papers. The only thing is that they go out quickly so get a lot! Its cheap too!
