This hair comes from the Siberian and Manchurian Sable, better known under the name of Kolinsky. It is a small animal that lives in the coldest areas of these regions, giving it a very strong and dense hair, an ideal hair for watercolor. It has fantastic spring, snap, and color holding ability.
The Series 8404 brush is made with top-quality construction, and is set in a seamless, nickel-plated brass ferrule on a short, black varnished handle.

Great brushes for watercolor painting.
from Cottage Grove, OR
I love all of these brushes and have several sizes that I routinely use when watercolor painting. My friend and I happened across these brushes and now each have these as a main part of our supplies.
Not happy with the flow of paint from the brush.
from Covington, La
I am preparing for a workshop and pointed brushes were requested in size #2 and #3.. I chose the sables thinking they would hold more water and distribute evenly, but they do not. My synthetics do a better job. I am very disappointed to have paid the additional cost for these brushes.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that these brushes were not to your liking. Although certain natural hair brushes hold more water than certain synthetics, there are so many excellent synthetics available, and in such variety, that it's no longer safe to assume that natural is always superior. Please know that our Product Information Team is always happy to guide you in brush selection. Product Specialists are available weekdays from 8am to 5:30pm CST at 1-800-933-2542 or email@example.com.
Great brush for comic inking.
By Jeremy Megert
from Dallas TX
I use this brush for traditional comic illustration on 11x17 art boards. The 8404 size 2 is one of the industry standards for brush inking. The 8404s tend to be of very consistent quality although the most recent one I got had a tip that isn't very good. I've been using these brushes for over a year and it's the first one I've had a problem with.
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that one of the brushes you ordered isn't performing as expected, and we're happy to help you with this. One of our Customer Care Representatives will be following up with an email to offer further assistance.
Still better than the Windsor and Newton series 7
from Marietta, GA
For comic book inking, I still rate the 8404 as slightly better than the W&N series 7 brushes. It seems the quality of both is more insconsistent than in previous years......but the 8404 seems to be slightly more dependable. I would suggest in the future that Dick Blick always ship the brush with a plastic cover over the tip. I had a no. 1 brush delivered without it, and it was frayed as a result. The no. 2 brush I ordered DID have the plastic cover, and it made all the difference.
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that the brush you received was damaged in shipping, and of course we'll be happy to take care of that for you. Please give us a call at 1-800-723-2787 to speak with one of our Customer Care Agents. Remember, we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee!

This is a great little brush!

I bought the #4. This brush holds a lot of water, and comes to a fine point which springs back every time you use it. Excellent for detail watercolor work.

Worth it, if this is the tool you need
from Micanopy, Florida
There is no substitute for the way the little barbs in the sable hair grip pigment and water. It is amazing. I have several of these brushes and am careful with making strokes that don't ruin the tip, avoid rough watercolor paper, and wash/dry with care. They will last for years if you take care of them. Like an expensive camera, they are worth it if you know how to use them - you might even need it to get the desired picture. Just keep in mind most people use the camera on their phone and are perfectly happy.
Wonderful brush. Keeps it's point beautifully.

The is a great brush for details. My #4 actually has a better point but holds too much water for some things. The 04 gets the very small spots the others can't without leaving a puddle that could ruin your painting.
