Painters have always developed and adopted their own special strategies to create the ideal paint film. Michael Harding, in collaboration with writer and artist Pip Seymour, has created a range of oil mediums and varnishes that are specifically intended to work with Michael Harding Artists Oil Colors.
In formulating these Mediums and Varnishes, Michael Harding and Pip Seymour had three goals — to use only the highest-grade natural materials in order to ensure excellent working properties, to guarantee compatibility with Michael Harding Artists Oil Colors, and to ensure long-term stability when added to the colors.
The result is a range of varnishes and mediums that are an essential accompaniment to the painting experience and practice.
Balsam Resin Glaze Medium
This Balsam Resin Glaze Medium is a historic glaze medium that is based on based on Austrian larch turpentine and fused with dammar resin and linseed stand oil. It provides increased gloss levels and imparts depth to paint films.
This is a paste with a high oil content that is created from linseed stand oil and bleached beeswax. It increases the body of oil colors, and creates a satin-matte finish. Beeswax Paste is especially useful with opaque colors.
Dammar Glaze Medium
This is a traditional glaze medium that creates depth and gloss in transparent oil colors. It also speeds the drying process, making it ideal for use with slower-drying paints. Dammar Glaze Medium contains cobalt siccative.
This is a final picture varnish that creates a subtle gloss finish on oil paintings. Use it with opaque and semi-opaque colors.
This is a final picture varnish that creates a permanent, matte, protective coating on oil paintings.
Oil Paint Medium
This is a basic paint medium designed to ease flow, as well as to increase the gloss, transparency, depth, and beauty of oil colors.
This is an historic paint medium, based on light-colored Canada balsam and fused with dammar resin and linseed stand oil. Oleo-Resin Medium can be added to oil colors to enhance depth, gloss, and luster.
Resin-Oil Wax Medium
This is a soft painting paste derived from bleached, pure beeswax and fused with dammar resin and linseed stand oil. It creates a satin sheen and allows for gentle impasto effects when painting in layers. When settling occurs, stand the jar in hot water and stir the medium until it dissolves.

Michael Harding's products compatibility
from San Jose, Ca
Comments about Michael Harding Balsam Resin Glaze Medium:
Michael Hardings mediums are perfectly compatible for use with his line of fine artists oil paints but work equally well with many other brands oils. They are all blended with a particular function in mind, masterfully controlling the different attributes of a given application, the drying time, the degree of glossiness, the various dilution needs of any given oil paint for any particular use. Can be supplimented with various driers, oils or turps for specific variations. Great line of products.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good medium, but I like mine better

Comments about Michael Harding Mediums and Varnishes:
Got this MH medium 'cause their paint is wonderful. I paint in a thin, layered, realism-based manner, and have been using a medium of oil of spike lavender/stand oil/linseed/walnut oil I concocted myself (3 pts. oil of spike, 1 pt. stand, 1 pt. linseed, 1 pt. walnut). This medium gives a similar gloss and handles much like my own, and dries just a tiny bit slower. It works fine, no complaints, but I can make my own cheaper; the only downside to the MH medium is a semi-strong smell from the stand oil in it. I'm used to my own medium, which thanks to the oil of spike lavender, smells wonderful:).

Michael Hardings Oil Painting Medium
By James the painter
Just bought this Michael Harding oil painting medium and found out that it's linseed stand oil and double rectified turpentine. I thought maybe there was a bit more to the composition of this painting medium but that's it. I make this painting medium at home all the time. It does come in a nice glass jar with a black plastic lid that's easy to open/close and seals tight with no leaks. It's a simple medium to use and it does what it's says it does so that part is good but it's also very simple to make at home. Since it's turpentine it has a very strong smell to it. Those people sensitive to it should refrain from purchasing this medium. I have also noticed it's thinned down quite a bit. Stand oil is usually very thick like honey and turpentine is like water. This medium is very watery in consistency. When I make mine at home I use a 2/3 stand oil and 1/3 turpentine so the consistency of mine is much thicker than the Michael Harding medium. If you like a thinner medium which increases gloss and flow then this may be the medium for you. I would recommend this painting medium to a friend who likes a thin turpentine-based oil painting medium.
