I purchased this set with the hope of having something convenient to use for writing on certificates, but I could not get ink to flow through the cartridges to the point. I followed the directions provided, which did not include what to do if the ink didn't start to flow.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Manuscript Calligraphy set review
By Yasmina lol
from Houston, TX
It's very easy to use & writes so smooth. The pen works best if you know how to write with it. The whole kit is amazing. The booklet is helpful, comes with multiply ink containers, to pens with 4 different points.
Awesome product! Just buy it.

Work better than many brands
This is one of two pens I would recommend out of all Blick's calligraphy pen sets, the other being rOtring. I have had this set from several years and it is fairly good. I do not have experience with the larger set with gold nibs. This set is well designed and comfortable to hold, which is a big deal for calligraphers. My hands are a bit small, and this pen is not clunky or awkward. All fountain pens have issues with drying ink. It's a good idea to remind yourself that it's not a ballpoint or felt tip pen, and adjust your expectations accordingly. (Using a good ink such as Noodler's will result in greatly improved ink flow, even in a cheap pen). Keep a tiny vial of water on hand to dip the nib tip into if ink stops flowing. This pen actually has decent flow, and is far superior to Scheaffer and certain other calligraphy pens. Scheaffer just stops dead for no apparent reason and no amount of dipping, shaking, or swearing will get the flow started again. This pen is an inexpensive but usable pen. I have only one other brand that I prefer slightly, but that one has a scratchy nib that sort of scrapes the paper, so it's not perfect either. This pen works and holds up, doesn't crack or break, and the nibs are sturdy too. I don't think you will regret buying this if you just plan to rinse the dried ink from time to time. I do not use the wide nibs, only the narrow ones. I am left handed but do not use left handed nibs, and I write from the side, not the top. I don't have any problems keeping the ink flowing throughout the formation of the entire character I am writing, but then, I only use nibs 1.5 and narrower. I can't speak to the performance of the wider nibs. The pen makes a nice line that is not too distorted and maintains distinct edges, rather than blurring like many pens will. The ink supplied is not bad either, and is fairly opaque black. I would buy this for a friend who was interested in beginning calligraphy, and consider it a decent pen to use long term. In fact, I have bought it for some people who admire my writing and express a desire to learn calligraphy or add style to their cursive.
the pens are very professional looking...
I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the pens and nibs were packaged, looked like a good set. bought for a gift
Manuscript Calligraphy Pen set
By Richard the Calligrapher
from Eugene, OR
I started doing calligraphy in 1964, back in the day when you could get Osmiroid and Platignum fountain pens. The manuscript pens are not as good, but appear to be the only fountain pens being made. The "adaptor" included with each set is good, if you're as cheap as I am and don't want to keep spending money on small ink cartridges. Still, although those adaptors can leak, occasionally, the pen points are pretty crisp and clean in their lines. The price for the set is O.K., but otherwise, to do calligraphy, you're forced to use felt tip pens (even if you have to shape the tips with a razor blade) or Speedball dip points. Or, you CAN whittle your own quill pens, especially if there are geese around. That works, and the quill pens don't "splutter" when you push the point away from you in an up-stroke. But they're REALLY conspicuous in your pocket.

A good writing instrument
from Chicago, IL
This is a good calligraphy set with a selection of several nibs. The pen and accessories are packaged in an attractive silver-colored tin and stores easily. The pen holder and nibs are of good quality.

Not worth it!
from Nashville TN
I use the calligraphy pen for most of my note taking, filling out forms, and similar paperwork for the neatness. Unfortunately the Manuscript pens have been a total waste of money and time. Even with the cap in place, and day to day use the ink dries up too fast and I am constantly having to clean the nib to even write a few words then the ink flow stops. It is too much work. I wish I could find a "really good" calligraphy pen.
