These colored pencils were developed to mimic the world's most common skin tones, for rendering subjects in their true skin color. What a great addition to your portrait palette!
Pencils are 10 mm thick and pre-sharpened. The thick 6.5 mm leads are dipped in wax to give them a soft touch and break resistance.

Comments about Lyra Skintone Giant Pencils:
These pencils are great just have to know what your doing. For portraits start coloring very lightly then add more pressure to it.

These pencils aren't top of the line. But with a creative mind patience you can use them just as well as the others. I used these in a portrait drawing I used hair oil to blend colors in using ear swabs. Color lightly and keep going over itto get it darker and blend it with oil or alcohol.

Love these Lyra pencils!

The Lyra Skintone Giant Pencils are fantastic! Students use these for a wide variety of projects. The pencils last a very long time, even with frequent use by many students over several school years. You can tell it has been a long while since we needed new ones because the old ones were the flat-sided ones that could not be sharpened with a pencil sharpener but with a sharp blade of some kind. My students and I love the newer (to us) multi-sided pencils that can be sharpened with a pencil sharpener now.

Lyra Skintone pencils
By New colored pencil artist
These pencils are nice and thick and blend together very well. Due to their size, they don't break easily and last a long time while coloring in large spaces. Using these pencils has made my portraits more realistic. Yes, some of the higher end pencils maybe a little creamier but for the price, these work very well.

Not bad but lacks warmth

I have been using Prismacolor for over 25 years, so I wanted to branch out and try other kinds of CP. Since the majority of my work is portraiture, I had hoped that these would cut some steps in my creative process, thereby increasing my speed to completion and saving me a little time.PROS: The color range is VERY nice. The size of the pencil feels good in your hand. The lead is creamy, lays pigment down smoothly, can be blended well with a stump, blender, mineral spirits, etc.CONS:There is no open stock, and in some lot #s produced, there are no indication on the pencil of what color you need, but since there is no open stock, you would have to replace the entire set. Lyra confirmed that they were no longer producing this product with the color codes on the pencils. You can't fit them in a conventional pencil sharpener. They lack warmth and depth. You would still need to layer with other pencils or your work will look very flat. Overall, I can't rate them very high, even though I did like the feel of the pencil and its creaminess. I can't replace any colors that I run out of, that is, even I could even identify what color it was to begin with, and I have to layer with pencils from other sets to achieve any depth of color or my painting looks flat. By no means would I rate the QUALITY as inferior, because they are well made, they just aren't practical for my personal use.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
