Great for acrylic painting
from Seattle, WA
Comments about Loew-Cornell Utility Brush Sets:
I Use these in all of my acrylic abstract work. The smaller brushes are remarkably precise. They are thin so I don't have to waste a lot of paint to make good opaque marks. Acrylic paint is hard on brushes and it's hard to stop and be overly protective of them. When they wear out, replacement is economical. I have recommended these to my students who work in acrylic paint also.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great set, recommended for any type of usage.
Good utility brushes
I am grading these average only because I haven't compared them to others. I use the smaller brushes with matte mediums and gels and the larger brush with gessos. My only complaint would be that I wish they could be ordered separately as the smallest one gets 10x the use of the others.
Very economical. Bristles don't come out. Just right stiffness for varnishing.

I got these brushes to slather on some background colours. They spread the paint well, but the bristles shed a lot. It got better after the first use, but I still find random hairs on my canvas. Definitely rinse and shake them out *before* your first use. and go ahead and tug on the bristles a bit to get any loose ones out.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
get what you pay for

These brushes are great for doing washes, but hold Alot of water and can cause unexpected runs and big drips on the painting if you arent careful. Had alot of issues with brush hairs shedding onto the painting. Before use I go through and pull out loose hairs. They take along time to dry because they are natural fiber. Despite all these issues I find myself using them over and over because they really do provide smooth and wide spread coverage. Great for larger paintings.
They shed bad, bad purchase, you are constantly picking pieces out of your painting. Will throw out, waste of money.

The white synthetic brushes are workhorses in my studio. Never had any problems with shedding, unlike natural bristle brushes. I was really impressed with the quality of these brushes, given the price.
Too many bristles left on canvas
I would have loved it if these longer bristled brushes would not shed. Unfortunately the bristles were falling all over the place on canvas, easel and floor. I will not be able to use them.
Smooth coats of gesso/varnish everytime.

I love these nylon chip brushes. They are great for when you need a super smooth, thin coat of gesso or varnish. Using these brushes reduces the amount of sanding I do between coats. They dry quickly after cleaning AND, they are so inexpensive that if you wait a little too long to clean them, it isn't a heartbreak to throw them away. They can be a little hard to find, so I am thrilled when I find them in stock!
