Wonderful for oil pastels
from Pacific Coast
Comments about Krylon Kamar Varnish:
I use this as a final fixative for oil pastel on pastel paper. Though oil pastels are not as prone to smearing as soft pastels, they remain tacky, attract dust, and can be marred by touch. Framing under glass protects them, but requires spacers to keep the tacky oil from sticking to the glass over time, and frankly I'm too lazy to mess with it all. Based on a few older reviews from oil pastelists, I decided to give this a try, and I'm very glad I did. With medium soft pastels (e.g. Cray-pas Expressionist), I wait a few hours after finishing the painting and give it two light coats, just a few minutes apart. Wait 2 hours to handle per directions on the can and it's ready to frame, store, whatever. It feels dry and smooth, with no tackiness. Quite amazing actually how it de-tackifies instantly. There is little to no color or highlight shift. Just a soft sheen that slightly sharpens the painting. Just beautiful. For soft oil pastels (e.g. Sennelier), it's best to wait a few days before spraying, and then one might need to give two light coats, wait a few hours and coat again to reduce the tackiness. The appearance is the same as with the less soft oil pastels. You can still see subtle details and individual stroke marks and there is no melting together of the waxes and oils as some other sprays sometimes do. As others have noted, the odor is strong, and it really lingers if you spray indoors, so try not to spray indoors. It dries pretty quickly and only takes a moment to spray, so unless it's raining, one should be able to spray outside most of the time. Other reviewers have had good results on their acrylics and watercolors, so I'm happy that I can use one product for those as well as my oil pastels. Much simpler than needing a different product for every type of medium. The Kamar Varnish isn't super cheap, but it's not over-priced like a couple of other brands. If you've been looking for something to protect your oil pastels, I recommend giving this a try.

This stuff works great! I have used other brands and keep coming back to this. Unlike brush on varnish it does not bubble, and through thin coats I can build the depth and sheen I want. I have used Gloss but prefer semi-gloss. It protects, seals and finishes my oils and acrylics, and even watercolors beautifully. The nice thing is it is retouchable, meaning I can tweak a painting and then apply my finish spray again. All my colors look rich and gleaming.

I have used Krylon Kamar varnish for many years, and find it a valuable varnish for a newly painted oil. It acts like a retouch varnish, and is good at restoring the oil brilliance until it is time for the final Damar varnish when the oil is completely dry.

I have used this product for years!
from Ruidoso, New Mexico
The fact that I have used this product for years, speaks for itself. The convenience of spraying on varnish versus using a brush to stroke it on, is invaluable. Time is important to me. I get nice even coverage on my work and at an affordable cost. I have no complaints. If I did I wouldn't use it. Unfortunately I live in a small village and there is no other way to obtain it except by purchasing on line.

Krylon Kamar Varnish For Beautiful Finsihed Luminosity
I am a casein painter using the Dick Blick Cradled HB Panel for my painting surface, and after my painting is finished, I let my casein paint cure for 24 hours, then lightly use Krylon Kamar Varnish. I apply this varnish in a well ventilated room or weather permitting outside for proper safety handling of this material. Do not breathe this vapor aerosol in a closed room. Be safe. not quite what I was looking for
I don't have anything against the product, I got it since I was interested in a varnish that allowed reworking. I'm experimenting and it didn't quite work for what I was trying to do: after applying it to a very smooth surface I tried to paint over with Holbein Duo Aqua Soluble oils but thin brush strokes reveal the granulated texture of the spray varnished surface and the paint is getting 'stopped' by the texture, it doesn't really flow easily.. Maybe I'm mixing the wrong materials, or applying to the wrong surface, I will keep experimenting.
