Technical pens were the mainstay of the designer and illustrator's craft before the development of computer graphics. Now, many artists and design professionals are rediscovering the technical pen because its handiwork, in expert hands, stands out almost magically against the bland precision of computer rendered graphics.
Dependability and high performance make Rapidograph technical pens the first choice among artists, designers, drafters, architects, and hobbyists. Rapidograph pens provide uninterrupted, productive drawing time.
Each Rapidograph pen has a white plastic barrel with a refillable ink reservoir (pens do not come filled with ink), and a color-coded cap and point section. The double-seal cap is air-tight to keep the point from drying out.
Each pen is identified by a standard point size or by its line width expressed in millimeters. (Point sizes do not correspond to points in the point/pica system of typographic measure.) Replacement point sections are available for all pens.
For optimum performance, use with Koh-I-Noor Ultradraw Waterproof Ink or Trans-Mix Media Brilliant Ink.

Comments about Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph Pens:
Love these pens for my pen and ink art work. Most of my work is in the stippling style, these pens are the only ones I will use.

Problems with clogging!
from Jackson, NJ
I love how these pens work. I have purchased 3 of them to date, thinking perhaps I did something wrong. Recently I bought a special cleaning kit, watched several You Tube videos about it, tried that (all three suggestions), and the pens still do not work. I was using them fairly often, so it was not a case of non-use. I purchase name brand artist quality inks. I wish they would fix this problem, as I really love working in pen, and these pen give so many options for line weight and color!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Koh-I-Noor Rapidiograph Pens
from Costa Mesa California
I discovered these pens while in high school back in the late 60's.In 1970 I purchased a set of them in a round pen holder with a clear plastic cover. They lasted for decades. They work perfectly until I leave them for too long with out using them or cleaning them.Any time that I have had problems with them has always been my own fault. They are really easy to clean if your careful not to bend the plunger wire.Nice clean lines is what they are really great at. My drawings have always been done with these pens ever since I first discovered them as a student. I can't even imagine using any other brand. I prefer water proof ink so I can add color with water colors to my art. The in house brand of ink seems to work best for me because it doesn't clog as quickly as other brands. I recommend only filling the pen 1/4 full with ink if your not going to be using it that much. That way you don't waste your ink when you clean it after use. These pens are reliable and consistent in quality over the years. Like old friends. You can contact the company for any reason and they are helpful and concerned with your use of their product. Which is what you want, a company that stands behind their product.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Not an end all be all solution to the 'Perfect Pen Quest'
By I Draw A Lot

They work well. You have to direct the pen tip directly downward to get the solid line to which the advertising of these pens state. These pens are also surface dependent, on a surface that gives, these pens skip. However, I assume with practice one would be able to use this pen very effectively if inspired by it. I used the ink recommended for this pen by Koh-I-Noor, I found it could have been a bit thinner as I believe it produced an inconsistent line from time to time. Also, do not think these pens are incredibly smooth. They may be smooth as technical pens, but they are not pencils or ball points or felt tips or charcoal etc. etc. etc.. If you are looking for an 'artsy' technical pen, then stick with a Micron or something similar as you can angle the pen tip. The pen tip for a Rapidograph must be orthogonal to the drawing surface in order to run smoothly, and it is difficult (at first, without practice) to prevent the edges of the pen tip from angling into the surface which prevents the pen from functioning as intended. Personally, I will go with Speedball Calligraphy B nibs because I do not need a technical line and am looking for a more 'free-form' 'flowing' 'easy to use' and clean line pen with less cost and consistent line weight. Another note, the design of these pens is very troublesome at the point at which one holds the pen. After a long day of drawing, the screw threads at the hold point irritated my fingers.(Imagine where you hold a pencil, insert little plastic screw threads where the pencil rests between your index and middle fingers. Then imagine these threads moving very slightly all day with the movement of your hand and wrist. Overtime, I assume calluses would form, but this irritation was worth noting from an ergonomics point of view). I do not know how these pens compare to similarly constructed pens like pens available by Rotring.
The technical pen I cannot live without.

Very pleased that Blick was able to supply a couple of replacement points for my favorite pens. Quickly! And a great price.

I have used a set of these pens for about 22 years, cleaning them religiously between refills. Okay, so I wear one out every couple of decades, that's why I have to order new ones. I started using them in school and now I am using them for everyday use and to create hand-drawn ads. I don't like disposable products, from an environmental impact angle. So that's why I use these, plus the fact they are great. I can't compare them to others because they are all I've ever used.
It Gets The Job Done

The Rapid-O-Graph pen point replacements hold up well. I do a lot of ink cartooning and the fine points eventually wear out but are not so flimsy that I do not get my money's worth from them. It is a solid product. Also, Blick's professional approach in filling out my order is topnotch and timely. I recommend them whenever someone is looking for supplies from a reputable company.
Pens of a lifetime
from Crescent City
These pens have literally revolutionized the way I draw. Up until now I have used Micron pens, never knowing about Rapidograph. The ink flows so smooth and evenly and I have never been able to achieve the pointillism technique to this quality. These pens have brought a whole new style to my artwork! I am also an art teacher and am going to teach Rapidograph techniques to my young adult students.

I was first introduced to these pens when I was in a college drawing class. They have consistent stroke and if one takes care of them will last a very long time.

The Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph technical pen is a legendary art tool that produces consistent lines for fine illustrations and drawing. The Rotring Rapidograph pen is also a quality and versatile technical pen with a disposable ink cartridge.
Wondering how to clean your Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph technical pen? It is a very easy process; just follow these simple steps and you'll have your pen working like new!
