Comments about Koh-I-Noor Gioconda Soft Pastel Pencils:
After using several pencils in the set I came across one which had no lead. I needed to sharpen it almost half way down before I found any lead. I spoke with a customer service person who offered to replace the set. Thank you DickBlick-your customer satisfaction & service is admirable. I will definitely order art supplies from you in the future.

I have illustrated (and written) two children's books ('Back When and For Now' and 'Not For Now But Soon') using these pencils, amongst other things. They are soft but if you get a good electric pencil sharpener and you're careful, the detail you can get is beyond what you see in a photograph!

I bought these to handcolor traditional silver-based photographs. I also own Prismacolor oil pencils for this purpose. The struggle I've had using pencils is they're too hard and require really pressing into the photo which dents the paper. These pastel pencils work better...and I can soften them with some water to avoid heavy pressing. But pastel sticks still work the best. I like the Cray-Pas Expressionist. Of course the problem with the sticks is the inability to do fine detail...which I wanted pencils. But since I have to soften the pencils with water, I'm not getting the detailing ability I wanted. I didn't downrate these pencils, because the problem is not with the pencils themselves. The problem is with the material I'm trying to use them on. I'll keep searching.

Just received these, and I really like the way they lay down color and can give a sharp edge when needed. Really like these pencils!

I love working with these pastel pencils. They are soft enough to give a smooth application, but also good at rendering crisp detailed lines.
Love these pastel pencils
I work in collage and use pastels to soften edges of the elements that I use. I was finding that stick pastels were hard to control where I wanted to apply. The oencils with their fine point allow for more nuanced application and more subtle effects.

A real improvement!

In comparison to the other brand I have used, this pastel is much better. I can do much better at drawing the detail I need for the face of the angel I am painting with pastel. I feel more confident.. I can keep a better point. I will buy more colors in this brand.
