Welcome to dickblick
Ancient oriental watercolors are characterized by their delicate hues. Now today's artist can journey back into time to create with the same timeless palette used by Japanese and Chinese artists 15 centuries ago.
Delicate and harmonious, the 48 Irodori colors are created using pure pigment in gum arabic for clean, crisp results that won't darken or muddy. Highly saturated, they granulate very freely, and are more opaque in the true Asian fashion. Available in 15 ml (0.5 oz) tubes.
For a complete listing of the colors in each set please refer to the Item Specs tab on this page, or click the magnifying glass icon next to the set name in the table below.

Because of their high saturation, Irodori colors do not adhere well to a palette. Holbein recommends that you squeeze out only what is needed at one time, and leave the balance in the tube.

Comments about Holbein Irodori Antique Artist Watercolors:
All types of Holbein watercolors (including regular, Irodori and gouache) are my favorite brand and the irodori line is especially wonderful. I was extremely sad to see that the irodori line was being discontinued! I hope that Blick will consider bringing them back in the future!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

These antique watercolors are very bright! I have them dotted out on a porcelain palette- they're very easy to rewet. They're very smooth when making washes - absolutely no granulation.

Interesting watercolor, I don't usually use this brand. The product-description says that these are more "antique" style which should give a more "clean" results, and I can't really comment on that since "clean" results are probably more the business of brush and color-mixing techniques than anything else. But some pigments are just impossible to find otherwise, and I was desperate to get Phthalo Cyan (Pigment PG17), (their "Antique Turquoise") which doesn't crop up among other manufacturers' paints very often.
This paint is rich and vibrant. Very wonderful to work with. It's become a favorite!

Japanese Antique Colors Now Possible
from Glenview, IL
Through the use of Holbein Irodori Antique Watercolor Paint, it is now possible for me to create paintings of antique Japanese kimono textile motifs. Japanese color combinations are unique and different from Western use of paint value and color combinations. Holbein consistently produces excellent professional grade gouache and watercolor paint. I have purchased and used other brands but have always returned to the Holbein product line for their rich hues and excellent drying results which do not change in value either dark or light. What you see is what you get. What more could an artist ask for when looking to translate with paint and brush an authentic Japanese modern vision?

pleasing the muse
It has been a while since I had new colors. I was pleased with the unique colors in the antique line of Holbein Irodori, so I added Ochre, Jasper Green and Pompadour to my collection of 10 others. It had been a while since I painted, so I took my Arches paper outside on a beautiful May day, with the idea to use only the Irodori paints. Mixing the colors, I was completely focused and dazzled to see new shades emerge, in love with painting.

Holbein Irodori Antique Artist Watercolor is Exceptional
Irodori Antique Watercolors duplicate Japanese textile colors. I use Holbein Gouache and recently bought Irodori Watercolors to add to my palette. They remain clear and bright even when mixed. No other brands of professional paint mix Asian colors as well as the Irodori.

i bought this in antique coral and antique gold. the coral was absolutely beautiful. the gold was also so beautiful, however it was a little too transparent for my liking, but beautiful for subtle touches.

a few colors are really excellent...
from New Jersey
Have to agree with the last review, some colors are better than others. Love the Opal Green, Tyrian Purple, Antique Rose, had no use for the Coral Red, Antique Brown-Grey, or the Pale Blue - these last three just did not offer anything unique as far as their colors went. BUT I would absolutely recommend having at least a few of these in your paint arsenal, unique enough texture and color to make it worth while. Thank you.
