Holbein's opaque matte gouache is Japan's foremost designers' color medium. These paints deliver a brilliant, rich matte finish using naturally opaque pigments — no opaquing agents are added. This creates vibrant, exciting color that won't muddy when mixed.
Truly professional grade, this gouache does not darken, bleed, or crack. Use it in dense opaque layers to build surface body, or thin it with water to semi-transparency. Available in a wide range of colors in 15 ml tubes.
Gift Idea — Sets of Holbein Gouache are a great way to sample a selection of these vibrant colors. See Holbein Artists' Gouache Sets for pictures and more detailed specifications of these sets.
Color Chart Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

Comments about Holbein Artists' Gouache:
I did not want an acrylic guoache type paint since I already have acrylics and like them too. The watercolors I noticed tend to run so thought I would try this paint since it is a watercolor but seems to be more like a grainy paint that I might like better. I did check the first 2 tube and liked the effects of those but have not done much painting yet with these. I will do that any day. I got sick the day they came so got sidetracked.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Best all around but a little pricey
from Milton FL
I have been using gouache to practice painting (brush mileage) for about 2 years now and have found that using the Artist level product and especially the Holbein product is the best. One great thing about them is that the tube caps can be open and shut easily after a year... some good brands gum up and I can't get the caps off... so now I'm replacing each used up color with a Holbein product. Colors are strong and there is little if any separation from binders. They are really opaque, so if you have goofed, let it dry, and you can cover it... Really like the variety of colors as well.

Being rather new to gouache, I first tried out some very cheap brands. I decided I liked working with it well enough, but had read the higher quality stuff felt completely different. I finally bought some black and white (mostly because I was running low on those colors for the cheaper brands), and felt the difference immediately! The colors are also much more vibrant. I have slowly been adding to my collection of colors with this brand - I love it!

Great quality paints
from Linn Creek, MO
A bit disappointed since I was hoping that the tubes were larger. I do like the quality of the paints, however.

The colors are so rich and juicy. Have not tried his product before and was thrilled with the hue and zest it added to my paintings
If you paint with gouache, by this.

For watercolor or tempera, the consistency and coverage of this gouache is superb.
A creamier zinkcwhite gouache
from Los Angeles, CA
I tried a 15 ml tube of this to use instead of Winsor & Newton. Just generally, I have nothing against W&N, but their zinc white gouache is way too stiff to suit most of my painting needs. The Holbein version is very smooth and creamy, with no excess medium accumulating when you squeeze some out. I also find the coverage to be more than adequate without having to thin it down much. Mostly I use it for waves and foam lines in my seascapes, but am finding I'm using it more often for other mixing because of it's wonderful consistency. I liked it so well and I use so much that I stepped up to the large tube!
Excellent colors, and worth the price
from St. Louis, MO
This is an excellent gouache. It is a little bit more concentrated than others I've used, which makes it a little bit easier to spend the dough on Holbein. With less water content, I personally feel like I'm getting more paint for my dollar. The quality of the paint is amazing, and It's easy to use.
