Holbein has created a unique and versatile product for the decorative and fine artist. It can be used as a traditional underpainting on all surfaces, including paper, cloth, many canvases, wood, stone, and primed metal. It also acts as an extremely opaque and ultra-matte finish acrylic paint medium. Finally, it’s a fantastic acrylic paint.
Holbein Colored Gesso is highly pigmented, with an extremely smooth texture. It can be mixed with any acrylic paint or medium and finishes to a matte surface. It may be overpainted with water-based or oil-based colors or pastels. Available in a full spectrum of beautiful colors.

Since I discovered colored gesso, I've never gone back.
from Washington, DC
Comments about Holbein Acryla Colored Gesso:
I use it to tone the canvas for my landscape paintings, and much prefer colored gesso to the standard "Rubens Gray" I was taught to use for landscape. As far as I know there are no other makers of colored gesso.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this to tint my canvases prior to oil painting. I goes on smoothly and evenly.
The gesso applies smoothly and is easy to work with!

Great product I use on every canvas prior to starting
Pretty Good Stuff
from Manhattan, KS
I used Holbein Colored Gesso for the first time and was really impressed by how little you needed to cover the canvas, I bought the Red Ochre and the Gray V-5. I poured out a good amount, cause thought it might take 2 or 3 coats to get my desired coverage. Using my hake brush, it cover the whole canvas (8x10 canvas board), in one coat. I really liked it. I would have give this a 5 star rating, but I really didn't care for the packaging, a bottle would have been better, or some kind of a container that made it easier to pour from. That being said, I'm going to be a repeat costumer.
Great product ! I would buy it again.
By tight painter
I like starting out a painting on a mid tone background. It helps to make the painting Process go faster. If my Painting has a lot of green in it I use the red gesso and let small amounts show through next to the green . The gold gesso is fun to use when painting Christmas decorations. It is great to use when painting fish if you want to jazz it up. My next painting will be of fall leaves I can't wait to see the bright orange leaves with small amounts of the blue gesso showing through. What a great product! thank you Holbein !

I love my gold gesso and it came early!
I love starting out with gold gesso on my canvas , the paint flows!
from Space Coast Florida
This gesso is a beautiful true gold, not the darker antique or the lighter almost-yellow color. It goes on very smoothly and dries quickly. One coat is typicaly sufficient; however, I had one small canvas that must have been drier because it seemed to suck the gesso into it more, so I had to add another coat. So far, I've only used the gesso with acrylics but will try with oil soon. Yes, it's pricey, but if you want a special finish for a painting, as I did, the cost is worth it.
